How do I get myself to care about school?
For info: I'm currently in highschool, in year 11/grade 11. My grades are low (I'm failing a course too) When I was a little child, I took school more seriously, and I actually enjoyed going to school because I got to do fun kid stuff - alongside learning. But things change when the 2020 covid-19 quarantine happened. After that, I found it difficult to actually care about school. I didn't enter highschool with a good mindset. Throughout grade/year 9, 10, and 11, my grades have been really bad. What makes it worse is that my mom is all about "getting your education" because it's how she was raised, so me and her would often get into quarrels about my efforts in school. Throughout highschool I've been so miserable. A big portion of my stress comes from school. It makes me neglect anything that has to do with school I.e. overdue assignments. This has just gotten worse overtime. Before I entered highschool, I confidentally told my mother that I would never skip school...spoiler: I do. This year, I've skipped more school than any other time in my life. Another thing which makes it difficult for me to care about school is that I have no plan on what job I intend to go into. I'm just doing random courses to get my credits. This makes me value school a whole lot less because...what's the purpose of it? I take a course, learn and have to memorize a bunch of stuff which I will forget overtime, stress about assignments that are due, and get my credit. That's it. I feel so directionless right now and I find no purpose in going to school. But, does this mean that it isn't important? No. I need my highschool diploma of course. But still, I've tried to get myself to actually care about school but I just don't. I always see it as of lesser importance. I envy the people who can genuinely care about school (and have high grades as well). Because I struggle to do both of those. I could go on for much longer about why I can't get myself to care about school, but I just want to find a solution.

i think the book from jade bowler 'the only study guide you'll ever need' summarises it really well. it expresses the view of intrinsic motivation - "the more joy you will find in the process of learning, and the more you view it as useful to your own interests, the more likely you are to organically succeed". i'm currently going through exams this reminds me why i want to do well as i don't have a set goal on what i'd like to be: "and at the end of the day, grades just give you options. if you have no idea what you want to do, trying hard at school is just one way to broaden your horizons" give this book a read, trust me :)
Reducing dopamine from habits
With the talk around dopamine detoxing, I thought I’d bring how smaller but more overarching changes to already existing habits can remind me why I truly do a habit or task. For example: I’m going to order unflavoured protein powder instead of vanilla, so it’s neutral rather than a sweet treat. I avoid music when working out. I restricted my painting supplies to one paint pallet and two brushes only. I restrict course-related study to 3 hours a day to ensure quality over empty busywork (Parkinson’s law). What are some changes you have made to minimalise/reduce your habits or daily tasks to help you focus on what’s important?

i think i resonate with this a lot, for example i think there is something so rewarding to get a dvd to watch a movie.

@Hana Ashworth this is such a powerful video. you really start to understand the power of a book when you genuinely want to read it, not when your school forces you to.
sleep.
i've been currently researching on the importance of sleep, and chronotypes. which one are you? https://psychcentral.com/quizzes/chronotype-quiz (i'm in the lion category)

How should I treat music during my dopamine detox?
So yesterday I started my dopamine detox, and I deleted apps, I planned it out, and yeah. The one issue is music. I like music, I like dancing as a hobby. But I'm on a dopamine detox, so should I be cutting back on that? Music does give me dopamine but I'm wondering if it's healthier. Or should I be listening to music which has no lyrics, and is one of those "ambient sounds/music"? (I'll link a video) https://youtu.be/sjkrrmBnpGE?si=ErX5yiV_GNZImrN6 Yeah I'm a little confused hahah. How should I handle music/dancing during my detox?

i think its important to have a balance. if you completely cut off a component, you are more inclined to draw back to the 'addiction'. i stopped listening to music for three to four months, but every so often i'll listen to the odd few and it makes me realise how impactful (in a good way) music can be. you don't really get that revelation from listening to it every day.
Writing Retreat & Digital Detox for 30 Days
Starting June 1st I'll go on a digital detox so that I can focus on writing my book. I really love this story and the ideas I have for it. What I don't love is that I keep letting a glass rectangle control my life. I'm going to use this platform to help me track my progress and keep accountable. Everyday I'll post progress updates and how I feel throughout the whole thing. I also got Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport so I'll be reading that. YouTube and Instagram will be off my phone. I'll only use YouTube on my laptop for workout and stretching videos. I'll have unhook on my laptop so nothing distracts me or attemps to. My writing project is a fantasy-romance book set in an eternal winter. The main characters are married and they have to go on this life or death quest to save their Kingdom. It's dual pov with ancient secrets, love, strong magical creatures, medieval setting, attack on titan vibes. I have 2 chapters written and going to start on chapter 3. Those are my plans! Here are some pics for the vibe of my project.
