Staying focused hasn’t always been easy for me, especially with my ADHD diagnosis back when I was a kid.
Constantly pulling my attention in a thousand directions. But over time, I’ve learned a few key strategies to eliminate distractions and lock in on the end goal.
I limit multitasking, set small, clear targets for each day, and create a space that minimizes interruptions(this is key!).
Most importantly, I remind myself daily why I started in the first place I go back to my “WHY” keeping that vision alive helps me push through the noise.
And here’s the thing ADHD can actually be a superpower, giving me bursts of creativity and energy I feel I can hyper focus and actually move faster this way!
Growing up I was ashamed of being “disabled with this diagnosis” but now I am actually proud to say I can use it to my advantage and so can you!
It’s one of my fav things, to use those things that were shoved in a box to “fit in” with society etc and turn them into superpowers 🤪 and show others it’s absolutely the way to walk in their passion and purpose welcoming all of their inner bits and pieces to the table.
Because when we can do that, that’s when the magic happens and we attract the people that are on the same vibe and create a community that is something fantastic
I got diagnosed with ADD when I was in my early 40's, I think, so I resonate with this. I also have a personality type that makes it hard for me to stay focused OR I hyper-focus and hours go by and I haven't moved out of my chair. Thankfully, my hubby is understanding, but it gets a bit tiresome for him when I don't complete tasks because I found something more interesting to do. 😅 (That's been part of my challenge with my energy healing business. When I had my bookkeeping company I really HAD to be organized and finish stuff, but it was often last minute.)
some ways I have found to help include either having various “tabs” open to choose from that all move me closer to my goal regardless of what my being decides it wants to do… and also rewarding myself for doing things I don’t really want to do but need done 🤪
Yeah, I'm the Queen of Open Tabs. HAHAHA! My hubby chastises me. I DO need to reward myself for doing the things I don't want to do. My hubby is so disciplined and will do those things first to get them out of the way. I've historically waited to do them last - which really isn't helpful as I just sit and dread them. 😅 Thanks for sharing your tips! ❤️
I wouldn’t say I had ADHD but focus has been a huge struggle for me ever since I was a kid!
Recently I’ve developing the simple habit of setting a 15-30minute timer and simply putting my phone away when I have to work did wonders to getting me to take those first difficult steps
i know right! i always write down things down and set a reminder that I want to get done. I find if I don’t there is a high likelihood I’ll forget about doing the thing
I just got diagnosed with ADHD two years ago. Now that I know what has been going on all these years, I realize the advantages I have had but also the challenges it caused me when I was younger. I've had to learn my strengths and weaknesses and then apply strategies to make it work the best for me. Thanks for sharing your story.
yes of course and thank you for opening up on this platform about your new diagnosis. I would say in a way it is a superpower because although you can lack focus and be easily distracted, you can also find a ways to hyper focus on things and get your work done. The biggest thing I’ve noticed is to put yourself in the environment this way you can focus on what it is you are doing.
the knowledge that you aren’t broken, your brain just works differently is so helpful, and then you can figure out how to turn what most would view as a negative into a superpower and that’s when things get really fun!
Brother you definitely are a superhero with superpowers. Keep being you. Good on you for not limiting yourself and keeping a positive mindset. We are not products of our environment. Our environment is a product of us!!
This is a fantastic post. I have a daughter with ADHD who got her diagnosis last month. I am currently looking for techniques to help her with her studying
for my one kid who hated sitting for long periods of time we would put stuff he needed to memorize to music, allowed him a yoga ball or a timer where he would see how much he could do then get up for 10 min to be active then come back and do more. We offered rewards he wanted after he completed things he needed to… we also decided eventually to homeschool/radically unschool so he could pursue his passion and purpose which led to him learning those things he didn’t want to because he needed to in order to keep moving forward in his passion.
Now at 19 he works on fancy cars and has his own place with no college or trade school… mainstream schools aren’t usually set up for kiddos like ours to radically succeed and oftentimes if they do they end up squashing things within that cause need for major undoing later.
Yeah, I really do. Feel like it can be a superpower. As long as you know how to utilize it. I feel like I am Getting the hang of it in my early thirties
Yes, I definitely resonate with this, having been diagnosed in my 20s during teachers college. Neurodivergence is definitely an advantage in my opinion.
For me, the trick was learning how to manage where my needs deviate from the ubiquitous programming of the status quo. What you said in your post is a perfect example -> “I limit multitasking, set small, clear targets for each day, and create a space that minimizes interruptions(this is key!).”
By scaffolding your day, it seems you’ve designed a personal system that optimises your success. Big fan of that! I’ve been working on a similar strategy myself.
I’ve always found it amusing that “ADHD” is a labeled as a “disorder”. My hyperfocus has served as an advantage my entire life. When I want something, there’s really no other option but to go for it. It doesn’t feel like hard work to achieve something I’m driven towards.
The bigger challenge for me is to take a break here and there. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve received concerned phone calls from friends and family because I’ve suddenly dropped off the face of the earth on a hot pursuit of a goal. Time flies when I’m in that mode. Weeks go by like hours. It’s truly surreal.
I started biohacking in 2016 and found there was a genetic connection to my “hyper mode” (COMT & VDR Taq). As it turns out, people with this particular configuration are highly prone to, not only ADHD, but burnout. That was an AHA moment for me, as I immediately connected it with a lifelong pattern I had of burning out every four years. I’ve since learned to pace myself by building “in the moment” activities and routines into my day-to-day😅 This has led me towards operating in more of a flow state. I haven’t had a burnout in almost 9 years!
Thank you for sharing you experience, Stephen. Glad to know from you, and from the many responses here, that I’m not the only one!😎
Thank you for sharing your story! It’s incredible how you've turned ADHD into an advantage and found a system that works for you.
I totally agree hyperfocus can be a superpower when managed well. Balancing that drive with pacing yourself is key, and it’s awesome to hear you’ve found that flow. Keep thriving!
I can resonate with this on a deep level, I've always had massive difficulties with ADHD as a kid. Teachers wanted me to take pills (thank god I didn't listen to that)! Now I basically do what you describe in your post. Amazing content mate, always providing value! 🔥
I see how my vulnerability does make for great content and relates to people, it still feels like pride or ego gets in the way sometimes Eventhough I know that is the way. Still growing, and opening up to social media on these things
Yes, sharing your message may help others. That is how I think of it. You never know who is hurting more than you. And this can help someone in such a big way!
It is definitely a superpower when harnessed! I'm learning that when I have my creative super power days, it's ok to take a few days to re-charge the battery that was depleted for accomplishing more in on day than should be possible lol
