I really like the idea of TMKWTD but it is very D&D and 5e specifically. I don’t play any edition so the mechanics are of little use to me - each entry requires significant reworking. When I first found it I was hoping for concise statements like you find for monster moves in Dungeon World: https://www.dwsrd.org/monsters/caverns.html#purple-worm
Best Hex Crawl System
So I've realized this is a hole in my rpg experience. Willing to hear what system have hex crawl mechanics, but mostly hoping to hear games that are primarily hex crawls, or other parts are built on top of those rules, instead of the other way around.

How would you describe your GMing style?…
…and where would you like to grow? One of the greatest gifts in my gaming career was discovering that I don’t have to GM like anyone else, and can find and build my own strengths into the GM I would like to be, someone I enjoy. I have plenty of examples and ideas, and I’m going to resist the urge to put my thumb on the scale and let y’all kick it off. I promise I’ll chime in later. ☺️

@Tristan Fishel Both? I was self-indoctrinating with the DW group on G+. A lot of great ideas there. Perilous Wilds has been an eye opener about how to play procedurally and help set up situations. The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth provide some great Journey procedures. While finding these resources, I dropped a long running campaign unintentionally. I just couldn’t build any more even though we were years in and the players were invested. Finally, self awareness. I like to make mechanics and tidbits of lore and have recognized that this is the lonely fun that I prefer.

Styles of Prep
It's been a pretty long time since we've had a poll, so let's get one rolling! This week, I'm curious how much people prep for sessions, and in what way. To keep the poll simple I'll just add prep amount here, but feel free to leave a comment describing your style of prep (bare-bones bullet points, notebooks, notion, etc). Personally, I'd say I'm a medium prepper. I always do it in notebooks, and I'll usually prep more than I need because I enjoy using it to wind down before bed. I'll usually have a few pages of notes for a session, and I'll put some sticky notes where I need them.

Everyone here sounds like veteran GMs, with self awareness of capabilities and limitations, comfort with the genre and tropes, and sufficient system mastery to keep the good bits and throw out whatever doesn’t fit. Other than just investing years into the hobby, how can any of us reach optimum prep***? *** Everyone’s level of prep is valid. Whatever you enjoy!
Reading Shadowdark shows why the game swept the Ennies
Just looking at the layout for the book I can see a great deal of thoughtful design went into the game. Simple things like all relevant rules bring on a single spread make reading and referencing rules easy. I'm definitely looking forward to playing the game and mining it for house rules.

How does Shadowdark play differently than other OSR games like OSE or Black Hack or even B/X? I’ve played a one shot at a con, the book is very usable, and I know it handles initiative and light in a very interesting way. But how does it play?

@Dan Green does Shadowdark have specific mechanics or procedures that encourage looking up from character sheets, or is it more a matter of fewer but streamlined rules? Every DMs ideal is for players to be engaged with the game and each other, and not their paperwork.
