Visiting Family for the Holidays?

Usually each year it's expected that I fly out to visit my mom and stepfather and other family members over the winter holidays, Christmas and New Years.

There are other benefits too, seeing old friends and spending time in NYC.

However, this year, I feel like the cons are quite heavy over the pros.

To travel and also put my dog up for shelter those weeks would cost $1.5 k at least, and then I don't really have a pleasant relationship with my family, and I have a major grant proposal deadline in January.

But there is also significant shame and guilt there and feeling apprehensive about suggesting to skip this year
