GETTING SUPER RICH
We’ve all heard it before: "Pay yourself first." It’s classic financial wisdom meant to remind us to prioritize saving and investing before anything else. But what if I told you that this principle extends far beyond your bank account? What if paying yourself first is the key not just to financial success, but to thriving in every area of your life?
The truth is, life demands a constant outpouring. We’re always giving—our time, our energy, our attention. And too often, we give until we’re empty. We give without ever stopping to refill ourselves, and when that happens, we start running on fumes. We get worn down, burned out, and eventually, we’re no good to anyone—not even ourselves.
So, what does it really mean to pay yourself first? It’s about more than just money. It’s about investing in the most valuable asset you have: you. It’s about making sure that you’re fueled, fed, and ready to give your best to the world. If you’re broke—mentally, physically, emotionally—how can you expect to help others? If you’re running on empty, you’ll end up becoming a taker instead of the giver you were created to be.
First, pay your mind.
What are you feeding your thoughts? What are you allowing into the most sacred space you have—your consciousness? In today’s world, we’re bombarded with information, most of it noise. If you don’t pay your mind with worthy things, if you don’t nourish it with wisdom, knowledge, and insight, it will starve. It will fill up with junk—things that drain you rather than empower you.
Pay yourself with education, with books that challenge your perspective, with conversations that stretch your understanding. Feed your mind things that elevate you, that make you think, that inspire you to grow. When you pay your mind first, everything else in your life shifts. You start seeing opportunities where others see obstacles. You begin to create solutions rather than just react to problems. A well-fed mind is a powerful thing.
Second, pay yourself with time.
We live in a culture of constant movement. The world tells us that to be productive, we have to be busy all the time. But productivity without purpose is just noise. When was the last time you took time just to be with yourself? Time to reflect, to think, to dream? If you don’t know yourself, how can you expect to navigate life with clarity?
Take time for solitude. Take time to understand your own thoughts and desires. It’s in the quiet moments that the loudest revelations are heard. Pay yourself with time to know who you are, where you’re going, and why you’re going there. When you do, you show up in the world with a greater sense of purpose and direction.
Third, pay yourself with nourishment.
We hear so much about self-care these days, but often, it’s reduced to surface-level activities—temporary fixes that don’t address the deeper issue. True self-care starts with how you fuel your body. What are you eating? Are you consuming things that give you energy, or things that leave you sluggish and tired?
Pay yourself by fueling your body with foods that give you strength, vitality, and energy. This isn’t just about diet; it’s about understanding that your body is the vehicle through which you experience life. If you neglect it, you’re neglecting your ability to live fully, to create, to give. You can’t pour from an empty cup, and if your body is broken down, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of your life follows suit.
Pay yourself with rest. Pay yourself with movement. Exercise not because you have to, but because your body was made to move, to stretch, to grow. Treat your body as the temple it is, and it will reward you with the energy you need to chase your dreams, to be present with your family, to give your best to the world.
Finally, pay yourself with grace.
We’re often our own harshest critics. We hold ourselves to impossible standards, beating ourselves up when we fall short. But life is a journey, not a sprint. You will stumble, you will fail, and that’s okay. Pay yourself with the grace to learn from your mistakes, to pick yourself up, and to keep moving forward. The road to becoming your best self isn’t smooth—it’s filled with challenges that will test you, but they’re also the very things that will shape you.
When you pay yourself first, in every area of your life, something amazing happens. You become more. More grounded, more focused, more capable of giving to others. You start to overflow, and from that overflow, you can pour out into the lives of those around you.
This isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s the opposite. When you take care of yourself—when you feed your mind, fuel your body, and nurture your spirit—you become the person you were always meant to be. You become a giver, a leader, a source of strength for those who need it.
But if you neglect yourself, if you run on empty, you’ll find yourself constantly taking—taking energy from others, taking time you don’t have, taking shortcuts that only lead to burnout. You weren’t created to live that way. You were made to thrive, to give, to contribute. But you can’t do that if you don’t invest in yourself first.
So today, I encourage you: pay yourself first. Pay your mind with knowledge, pay your body with nourishment, and pay your spirit with time to reflect and grow. Because when you’re full, when you’re whole, you’ll be able to give from a place of abundance. And that’s where true generosity lives.
With purpose and passion.
