Have you felt scared?
I remember the day clearly when I went to read to my son’s class.
The school sent a letter home asking for parents to come and read a book to their children’s class. I was barely two years in the UK, nervous and not sure of myself. But I wrote back saying that yes, I was interested.
The date and time were confirmed and I went in and read the book to a class full of bright-eyed youngsters sitting cross-legged on the floor.
The teacher was lovely. She told me that I was the only parent who had responded to the letter.
Well, my heart was beating louder than a drum and right into my ears. I didn't feel triumphant. I felt sick with worry.
My palms were both cold and sweaty but once I had finished reading, I looked up at the children’s faces, my son among them and saw them smiling.
When I walked back home, I felt a huge satisfaction and triumph.
At the outset, let me tell you this. I was scared out of my mind.
I was so anxious that I wanted to turn back and make an excuse later. But I marched on.
I went and did it anyway. Read a book to a class full of strangers (I blocked my son to feel a little less nervous!).
And strangely, I felt happy afterwards. I couldn’t quite figure out which feeling was stronger, and I didn’t care.
If the tests scare you, consider what is there to lose if you try.
Imagine how will feel once you come to the end of it, knowing that you tried. That you gave your best effort.
Your child will learn from that. Never underestimate that.
''Succeed or Learn'', I have borrowed this from an Imposter Syndrome session I attended last week.
And I thought it fits here perfectly. You win both ways.
