Day 18 of The Calm Catalyst
Today’s focus is on creating a pre-sleep routine to set the stage for deep, restorative sleep. By intentionally winding down and signaling to your body that it’s time to rest, you’re giving your nervous system the chance to fully recharge. What did you include in your pre-sleep routine? Did it help you feel more prepared for restful sleep?

Usually, I’m dead tired by the time I go to bed at around 7:30 or 8pm, so I haven’t had a problem lately falling asleep. It’s the waking up too soon that’s the issue. Anyway, I turned off all lights in the bedroom and turned my digital clock around so that the light from that isn’t shining in my direction. I simply have to reach over and turn it back around to see what time it is. Sometimes, my next-door neighbor plays music loud enough for me to hear the bass and percussions, so I bought good quality foam earplugs and a headphone to block it out. That seems to do the trick.
Day 15 &16 Calm Catalyst
Some of you did your own checkins but wanted to make a post for these days. I took some time this weekend offline and it was very healthy for my nervous system. You can't schedule posts on here (that I am aware of) so thanks for understanding. Day 15 was Digestive Breathing, helping you connect with your breath and stimulate your body’s natural ability to relax and restore. How did this practice feel for you? Did you notice a sense of calm or connection to your body? Day 16 is hydration with a twist. Did today’s hydration check feel different than your usual routine? Did it bring a sense of calm or awareness?

I always have a container of water with me wherever I go, including on my desk at work. I sip it throughout the day, so I’m always staying hydrated. Sometimes it’s a quick sip, and other times I’m paying more attention to how it feels. When I did it more slowly this time, it kind of reminded me of being on a beach as I felt the water go down, like I was following the movement of the water, and it reminded me of the tide. That was the mental imagery I had without even trying. Rather than thinking about it replenishing my body, it was more like I was becoming one with the water.
Day 13 of The Calm Catalyst
I will be sending a handout for everyone who responds to this post. Today’s practice is wonderfully simple and deeply restorative. Sometimes, the most effective way to reset your nervous system is to let out a good, old-fashioned sigh. Yes, really! How did today’s practice feel for you? Did you notice a shift in your mood or energy?

I’ve been aware for a while now that I’m a shallow breather, so this exercise of intentional breathing, along with the sighing, is up there in importance, really. After practicing the deep inhales and the sighs, I felt a noticeable shift in both my mind and body, as the sound of the sighs accentuated the feeling of letting go. It took some concentrated effort at first though because I’m not used to breathing that deeply, but I really felt the impact after a short while.
Day 10: The Calm Catalyst
Today, we’re introducing a soothing and grounding technique called the Butterfly Hug. This simple rhythmic practice is not only calming but also helps your nervous system process and release tension. How did this practice feel for you? Did you notice a shift in your energy or mood?

This exercise feels closer to an act of self-love than all of the others. I did the tapping and also included some rubs with my hands and thumbs, and it felt like I was parenting myself. It was very soothing.
Day 9: The Calm Catalyst
So turns out you all got Day 8 and for whatever reason it went missing in my inbox. Everyone can do their check in on the post I made yesterday about the missing Day 8 for that day. As for today, it's all about using our own voice to stimulate our vagus nerve. How did today’s practice feel for you? Did you notice any shifts in your energy or mood?

For me, music can be a powerful relaxer. The humming did create a feeling of calm, but from my experience, playing soft, meditative music in the background as I’m working from home, for example, creates an even greater calm in me by comparison. I think it’s because I’m not thrilled about my voice, lol, and when I hum, a part of my brain is actively thinking of which note to hit next. Calming sound coming from somewhere else seems to be more relaxing for me.
