Missed opportunity coping
I am so sad for my sweet 10yr old boy right now. He started to get sick the last day of his meet last weekend and due to this only improved 3 of his 8 races. He is now FULL BLOWN sick and will likely miss the entire meet this weekend which he is SUPER upset about because he was going to try to do a 400IM in a meet for the 1st time, and due to his young age it may not come up as an opportunity for the rest of the season. My poor guy! How do you guys help soften the blow of missed opportunities that they have no control over?!?!?!

@Mags Pellow he is so determined. He will be doing a 500free, 8 basic events and then attempting the mile at his next meet. Good luck to your daughter!!!
SIDE STITCHES in practice
Can someone provide suggestions for preventing and managing side stitches in practice? My 10 y/o swims 5 days a week and tends to get side stitches 1-2 practices every week that cause him pain so then he sits out for a bit. The sitting out or the coach coaxing him back in the water then makes him upset which only escalates the pain. He does not eat huge amounts before practice and hydrates well. He is VERY thin in general. HELP!!!!

@Pierre-Daniel Jacobs he does water and he is a good hydrator overall. Not sure exactly how much he drinks just before. He will eat snack size pretzel bag, a mandarin orange, & a cheese stick after school & before practice. He eats his big meal after practice when he gets home, I think it is DEFINITELY how he breathes while in a hard set but as he is only 10 it is hard to convince him of this. Thanks!!!
training sessions in the middle of school?
I am looking at the weekly trainings that are live with David and they are in the middle of a school day during the week (Tuesdays at 1:30 for us in Chicagoland). Any child who attends school and a y parents that works are not able to make these live sessions. Is there a work around for this?

Psychology’s influence
Hey, I’m Ally, a friend of David Karasek, and I am writing a project on the topic “the influence of psychology on swimmers”. My goal is to collect answers from a questionnaire I’ve set up on order to analyse the importance of psychology and how to use it to promote athletic success. I would be very grateful for anyone who’d be interested in answering the questions. Questions - How important do you consider the mental component of competition and training for your sport? - How would you split the difference bewteen the mental and physical component? - Do you do active mind training, is it included in your program? - What external factors influence your mind? - Have you ever worked with a sports psychologist to improve your mental resilience? If so, how did it change your approach to the sport? - What role does goal setting play in your training and competition preparation? How does your mental approach to goals influence your performance? - Can you describe a time when your motivation was low? How did it affect your training or competition results, and how did you overcome it? - How do you mentally adjust during a competition if things aren’t going as planned? Can you give an example of a time when mental flexibility helped you succeed? - Do you have any other mental strategies you use? - Does the physical or psychological enable you to push for longer or continue to endure the pain? - When you are competing, how do you know when to give 100% and when to conserve energy? - Do you think swimming backstroke vs the other strokes is mentally more challenging because you can’t see where you’re going and you don’t have a line to follow?

MY ANSWERS FROM MY 10 YR OLD'S PERSPECTIVE COME AFTER THE ### - How important do you consider the mental component of competition and training for your sport? ### I think the mental component once the skills are at least present is 75% of the battle in any individual sport - How would you split the difference bewteen the mental and physical component? ### I think that during dryland focusing on quality conditioning and team bonding / mental game is KEY. While the child is holding a plank - do visualization exercises or box breathing! - Do you do active mind training, is it included in your program? ### Our program does not do this - What external factors influence your mind? ### stress from social life, school, lack of sleep / nutrition, illness - it ALL influences your mindset - Have you ever worked with a sports psychologist to improve your mental resilience? If so, how did it change your approach to the sport? ### We have not worked with a sport psych (YET) - What role does goal setting play in your training and competition preparation? How does your mental approach to goals influence your performance? ### Goal setting should play into training etc but our program does not do this with the kids that are my kids ages (8-10) - Can you describe a time when your motivation was low? How did it affect your training or competition results, and how did you overcome it? ### When my son was feeling under the weather he just could not swim well no matter how much he wanted to which made him get into his head even further. - How do you mentally adjust during a competition if things aren’t going as planned? Can you give an example of a time when mental flexibility helped you succeed? ### My 10 yr old has not been able to adjust yet - Do you have any other mental strategies you use? ### box breathing visualization, alter ego use - Does the physical or psychological enable you to push for longer or continue to endure the pain? ### N/A to my 10 yr old - When you are competing, how do you know when to give 100% and when to conserve energy? ### My 10yr old doesn't quite get this yet

Swimming is what makes Jonah feel centered. But it can also make him turn into his toughest critic.
