Shin Splints
Hello fellow runners I'm having issues with shin splits. Does anyone know any tricks of the trade to help with them?

Hey Sarah sorry for the slow response! How are the shins going? Shin splints can be a real drag, and they often come on from doing too much too soon. Did you recently bump up your running volume or intensity? Another factor can be running form. Shin splints are more common with a strong heel strike. If you can focus on a midfoot or forefoot strike, it can take some stress off your shins. I have technique lessons around this in my app and plan to add some videos in here too. Do you know much about how you run? For now, there are some things you can do to help those shins feel better. Rest is key, and icing can also be helpful. But where a ball can really be your friend is in self-massage. Grab a tennis ball, a golf ball, or something else firm (avoid anything too soft!). Find a comfortable position and place the ball under your shin. Then, slowly roll your shin back and forth over the ball, focusing on any tight spots or knots. If you find a sore spot, hold some pressure there for a few seconds and then continue rolling. This self-massage helps break up those tight muscles and improve circulation, which can really speed up healing. I've even found dry needling to be super effective for shin splints, but self-massage is a great first step. If you'd like, I can put together a quick video showing some self-massage techniques. Just let me know! In the meantime, take it easy on the runs and focus on getting those shins feeling happy again. Sam
