I have been a yoga teacher for over 20 years and it is not uncommon for people to feel uncomfortable with closing the eyes in class, there can be triggers for previously held traumas and issues of trust and vulnerability - over time, they get there. We generally invite and give the option but never ask for them to do so. As for a home environment, I guess there could be similar reasons but it might also help for staying aware and not asleep should you be feeling really tired. Some people use Nidra for going to sleep but I don't, I explore it for other reasons and prefer to stay awake which can be very difficult sometimes! I have missed many nidras and just hope that it is all doing its magic whilst I am dreaming :). I have also tried Nidra sitting up and it's great, more meditative, more aware, more active but still a reset. When eyes are open, for me they are still in rest and low.
