New here!
Hi friends! My name is Kit. While I've played TTRPGs with quite a few different groups, none of them lasted very long facing the scheduling boss and most of my experience is from years ago! I mostly play D&D (started with 3.5, played some 4, now on 5) and some Pathfinder. So while I feel like I have experience I also kind of feel like a novice? I've been writing fiction for much longer than I've been playing TTRPGs and from my first game I've been interested in the storytelling and world-building elements of designing my own campaign. My biggest hurdle is... I'm not good at being put on the spot! lol I've recently joined a "Ladies Night" table at our local game shop to get back into playing after YEARS and I feel like every time the DM turns to me I am a go full-blown deer-in-headlights. I'm hoping this is something that I'll get better at with practice. Right now I'm prepping a pre-made adventure to do as a duet with my partner to get him to try the game and a low-stakes opportunity for me to get my feet wet in the DM seat. My Game Master’s Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying book literally just got dropped on my doorstep so I am looking forward to reading that and learning from you all! 💜

@Jim Freeman I tend to lean more towards discovery writing, but at times I will brainstorm a loose outline / idea of where I'm going-- especially if I write myself into a deadend.

@James Willetts I will for sure! Thank you! :)
How many campaigns have you played in/run that actually finished?
That is, how many TTRPG campaigns that you were a part of reached a conclusion where you'd say the fiction of the game was finished? Story told, done, complete, etc? Instead of fizzling out (due to scheduling conflicts, loss of interest, moving on to a new game, etc). I'm trying to figure out if my experience is typical or not. I've played in or run 20+ campaigns since I got into TTRPGs about 20 years ago, but I've only ever "finished" 3 campaigns. One-shots don't count! I mean something that was meant to be episodic and take a long time to unfold. (I made this a post instead of a poll because I'm interested in specifics if you have them!)

@Tristan Fishel I think that's a good rule to have! I started playing with a "Ladies night" group at the local game store and the people who come are totally different each week and we still have a lot of fun!

@James Willetts I think that's a fair ask! I had an inkling of how much work the DM has to do but I am prepping my first adventure and have to say I'm pretty overwhelmed with JUST how much it feels like there is to do! haha Delegating whatever other work you can to the group makes a lot of sense!
Live Event Canceled Tonight
Hey folks, unfortunately Jonah is super super sick right now, and I’m on the road for the holidays, so we won’t be able to have our usual live event tonight. Enjoy the festivities and your games and we’ll see you next week!

Hi! I'm a fiction writer and aspiring DM. I'm not great at being put on the spot so it will take some practice to get over that hurdle, but excited!
