Meshing Tools/Strategies
Hi everyone, I was lately hooked on some new meshing strategies to include in SplashFOAM, and I was curious to know what your preferred meshing tools/methods are. Feel free to write your experience with meshing in the comments below. This feedback will help me a lot. Cheers! [N.B.: I may consider generating some meshing templates for canonical flows at some point, so stay tuned ;)]

Most of the CFD solver now come with their own meshing tools. But there are some other available that are used for meshing as a stand alone tool like Pointwise (previously Gridgen) and Gambit. But I usually see the strength and weakness of each of them. Some are easy for the user to interact, some are a bit complex. Some can export mesh in other formats but some don't etc
Clearances in CFD
Hello, can someone give me a hand? I have to do a CFD analysis in Ansys Fluent of a rocket that we are going to manufacture for the student association I belong to. The problem is that the CAD file, as it is designed to be manufactured, has a lot of clearances and holes and when I import the geometry, put the enclosure and extract the geometry, as it has clearances the mesh gets into the gaps. Is there a simple way to change the CAD so that it only takes the outer surface (as if I put a cloth over the Rocket).

Why you want to do CFD at the first place? there are different tools, such as DATCOM etc (low-fidelity) which can give you fast results for these geometries. Usually, CFD is used when you want to study some complex phenomena like separation, shock interaction, transition, etc, as it requires some computational resources, specially in 3D.

Just to answer your question, "cloth over the Rocket". There is no such way, in CFD world, we call it water tight geometry. For that, you need to create a separate model that is clean and, preferably, a single part.
Turbulence Modeling
Can we use the same mesh generated for RANS to do LES or DES simulations? What are the best prectices in this regard?

Introduce yourself to the group 👇
Hi everybody! Happy to have you all here and very excited to kick-start a long journey of mentorship and growth with all of you. To help get to know each other and break the shyness, take a moment to introduce yourself below and let others know what you're currently working on (CFD or in general). ** Please make sure you have carefully read this post and participated in this poll [takes 5 seconds] Let's go!

Hello all, I am a mechanical engineer and I am in second year of my PhD at dept of mechanical engineering @ NMBU , Norway. My research area is investigating the aerodynamics of floating wind turbines. I am using OpenFoam as a CFD tool. I am happy to be here not only to learn but also help others who are new to CFD. I also have exprience of working on commercial CFD packages, Fluent and Star CCM+.
