The Definition of Swimming
What do you believe it means to "know how to swim"? ***Community Poll Question:*** What do you believe you must accomplish to be able to say, "I know how to swim"? Many professionals in this industry have disagreed on the answer to this very question. Many traditional swim instructors will IMMEDIATELY begin to teach a student how to swim freestyle, dive in deep water, and tread water in the deep end when that student hires them to "learn how to swim". They are well meaning, but set their student up for a hard time, fatigue, exhaustion, failure and disappointment.. especially if the student has no experience with how to use the properties of water that help support them. Especially if that student has a hard time breathing in the water in general. Many students who are brand new to the water, are begun with technique that leads to overwhelm due to freestyle, treading water, or diving to depth's complex natures. Not only do traditional instructors ask their students to "kick harder", bend their elbow at a 45 degree angle - but they are asking them to also roll onto their side at the right time, while turning their arms a particular way, and think about a ton of different things that need to be in perfect timing and rhythm... all while trying to breath while suspended in water that they are afraid of choking on. The student exhausts themselves, and begins to believe they aren't good enough, or that they just can't learn "how to swim", when the student needs to JUST be learning "how to swim", before trying to learn something as complex as freestyle, treading water, or other complex skills. ➕Knowing how to swim means to know how to remain calm, and float wherever you are in the pool, lake or ocean. ➕Knowing how to swim means to be free from reactivity in the water. ➕Knowing how to swim means to be able to enjoy and find presence in the water's weightless properties. ➕Knowing how to swim means to have confidence in water depths ➕Knowing how to swim means you can comfortably enter deep water without panic or anxiety, knowing you can stay afloat and move at your own pace.

My son had a near drowning and if all he could do was float and remain calm, until he got help that would've changed everything. Luckily he is alive, well, and in swim lessons and we are breaking the curse of not being able to swim for our future generations. So to me if you can float in any depth of water without fear everything else is secondary. I feel great swimming in the shallow end, but put me in anything over 5ft and I'm back at square one lol. I can't wait to start deep water mastery ❤️

@Dorothy Bean thanks so much for the encouragement. And Congrats to you for applying these techniques. It definitely was traumatizing but it showed me that everyone should learn how to be safe in water. Regardless if it's the shallow end, which is what we were in when it happened. I can't wait to be fully relaxed in the deep end.
It's okay to begin again
So I had 2 lessons this week...my first two since joining this community. I received excellent advice here and was told to work follow the shallow water mastery plan. The very first video emphasizes breathing outside of the pool. I must say it has helped tremendously! Focusing on breathwork before entering the pool really put me in the right headspace. Breathing allowed me to realize where my focus was...I've been too busy overthinking how to swim and thus, would momentarily lose focus and start sinking. The first lesson was the start of starting over. I told the instructor I needed a reset. At first, they told me to try to glide then use the kickboard, I couldn't do either. In previous lessons, those were easy, but something changed. When I tried to kick, the instructor said it looked like I was doing the right motions, but my feet were like Barbie feet. They didn't seem to move the water and I was just in place kicking, not moving from the spot. (I laughed, of course, because I could totally see myself kicking along and found the humor of the situation. It was also representative of my swimming journey.) I realized that I needed to start the breathwork again and for the rest of the lesson, that's all I did. As circumstances would have it, hours before my second lesson, I found myself with canceled meetings and was only a two minute drive from the pool. I went over and found out that for the hours leading up to my lesson, it was open swim. Turns out I had the pool and a very watchful lifeguard all to myself. I did breathwork out of the pool until my body decided I was ready to get into the pool, almost an hour. Once in, I sat on the ledge, with water up to my shoulders and did more breathwork as the pool was a bit too cold for my liking. Let me say, the breathwork was really great because when it was done, I felt lighter and did a little push off of the wall and streamlined a good 4 body lengths and then automatically started kicking. Before I knew it, it was time for my lesson and I felt so much better and my instructor even mentioned noticing a difference between the lessons.

That's so awesome!!! Glad you're gaining relaxation in the water. It's such a game changer. I was in the same situation. I don't start any lesson without my breath work. Great work!

@Dr. Erica Ligons thank you ❤️
First Day On my Own
This was my first day learning to swim on my own using the videos from this course. I finally achieved full relaxation in the water. I'm currently enrolled in an adult swim class and I've been doing that for about 2 months. While it helped with exposure, it never focused on getting my relaxed in the water. I am constantly pushed to do hard skills even when I would show fear. Even as crazy as trying to get me to tread water in 9ft of water without mastering shallow water first. I would have to psyche myself up before every lesson. This course has truly shown me that I can do this on my own and at my own pace. Thank you so much for this course and community. I finally believe that I can truly learn to swim and actually love the water ❤️
