Fitness Accomplishments
C'mon, brag a little...What accomplishments or goals have you met fitness wise as a father/dad? I love having something to work towards and find it to be a type of therapy as I push myself towards physical goals. Here are mine: -x2 half marathons -x1 marathon -Zion 20mile trail race -Ran 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours (Goggin's challenge) -Benched 315lbs -80hr fast (one of the hardest things I have done) -MURPH under 50min What should I do in 2025? I am so scared of triathlons because of the swimming!

I have been working long 12 hour shift 6 days a week at the hospital for the past 5 years. So all of my fitness and health goals were put on hold. It was tough to balance life working from 4pm to 4am only to get burnt out and repeat it again. I was absent from home responsibilities and unable to be at most of my son’s games for a couple years. So my biggest brag now is finally leaving that life and landing a job working as a Teacher’s Aide in the culinary program at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI). This change started early this fall and it has allowed me to coach my son’s flag football team, play volleyball 2 - 3 times a week, play pickleball 2 - 3 times a week, go on evening walks with my wife and kids, and finally getting back to a healthier lifestyle with meals and rest. My fitness goals have been dusted off now, and I’m feeling great.

Dark Hour Dads
I will be moving the Dark Hour Dads call to once monthly. It is officially wrestling season and Lincolns matches are on Monday nights. I love you all but I have way to much fun coaching Lincoln. The next call will be December 9th. I look forward to hearing from y'all!

Balance? Never Heard Of It
It seems like everyone always wants to talk about balance. "You just gotta have balance" or "find balance and you will be happy". I use to think that meant my days, weeks, and months are balanced with the right amount of work, exercise, time with family, learning, spirituality, etc... Now I am starting to think the only real achievable balance will be measured in decades. I am being pulled in too many directions right now to have the luxury of balance. If I prioritize something then another thing must be sacrificed. I think there are a lot of dads in the same boat and I think what is sacrificed is often our mental health. I just don't have time for a spa day!

I use to feel the same way until I was introduced to a new prospective. I was asked a simple question once of what was the definition of the word balance. I would say that most of us would agree that balance is having an even distribution of something like, weight, work load, responsibilities and so on. So my answer to this person was close to that. I later shared that often times I find myself sacrificing something to maintain or regain balance in my life. To my surprise the person that asked me the question followed up with, can’t you lean up on someone or something to keep yourself upright? Why sacrifice it when you have someone in your life you can lean on to and keep you upright? This whole time I have never once considered that the people I am making sacrifices for are the same people that can give me that balance. I was instantly reminded that I am imperfect and that I can’t do it all. I do need to lean on something to keep me upright. I have allowed my pride to get in the way to recognize that simple fact. I am fortunate enough to have a support system and they make my weaknesses strong. They give me balance. Letting them in is my sacrifice and I am grateful for every willing shoulder that I can lean up.
