What Is Unconscious Processing?
Have you ever had an epiphany while taking a shower or walking in the park? That sudden flash of insight, a creative solution to a problem you’ve been struggling with, is a perfect example of unconscious processing at work. While it might feel like magic, there’s a deeply scientific and spiritual explanation behind this phenomenon. Unconscious processing refers to the brain’s ability to process information outside our conscious awareness. This part of our cognitive function works like a backstage crew at a theatre – it’s unseen, yet it plays a crucial role in producing our thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. From digesting food to managing complex emotions and making decisions, a vast amount of mental activity happens beneath our conscious radar. Scientific research has shown that our brain is continuously bombarded with sensory data. It would be impossible for our conscious mind to process all of this information without becoming overwhelmed. That’s where unconscious processing steps in. It filters, sorts, and manages this flood of information, allowing our conscious mind to focus on the tasks. As Sigmund Freud once suggested, the unconscious mind isn’t just a storage space for forgotten memories or repressed desires. Modern neuroscience suggests that it is an active, dynamic system that plays a critical role in decision-making, creativity, and learning.For instance, a study by Dijksterhuis and Nordgren at the University of Amsterdam found that people distracted from consciously thinking about a complex problem often made better decisions than those who tried to analyse every detail consciously. On one hand, it’s rooted in neuroscientific evidence showing how the brain functions. On the other, it aligns with ancient spiritual teachings emphasising trust, surrender, and intuition. In Carl Jung's words, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life, and you will call it fate.” By consciously engaging with our unconscious mind, we enhance our cognitive capabilities and deepen our spiritual connection to the vast, mysterious universe within us.

There comes a certain joy when two ideas connect and make sense. I have noticed that sometimes, even when we are not thinking about a subject our brain is triggered by a concept and we start making connection to all the other ideas that we have been thinking about. With the knowledge accumulated over lifetime leading to a network of different ideas that our brain starts to configure a theory. Spirituality plays a huge part in our life and consciousness. It provides us with clarity by reducing the noise within and around us. We can only tap into our unconscious mind with a clear mind. We strive to get mental clarity throughout our lives, but we are so consumed in our everyday life that we forget to let our unconscious mind guide us.
The Spiritual Dimension of Discipline
Beyond the science, there's a spiritual dimension to discipline that is often overlooked. In many spiritual traditions, discipline is seen as a pathway to enlightenment or self-realisation. The Apostle Paul, in his letters, speaks about "running the race" with endurance, a metaphor for the disciplined life. Similarly, in Buddhism, the practice of meditation is not just about achieving a peaceful mind; it's about cultivating the discipline to sit with oneself and confront the inner workings of the mind day after day. This spiritual discipline is not about rigid self-denial; it’s about freedom. When you cultivate discipline, you’re not a slave to your impulses, moods, or fleeting desires. You’re in control. You choose your actions based on long-term values and goals rather than short-term feelings. This, in itself, is a form of liberation—a way to live in alignment with your true self rather than being buffeted by the winds of circumstance.

Spirituality plays a vital role in our being. We are part of this universe and its energy, we need to connect ourselves with our own consciousness. When we are not in-tuned with ourselves and our surroundings, we become immersed in everyday life chaos. If we can't find peace within, we lose purpose. When we meditate we unlock a new dimension to our subconscious mind, which provides clarity.

Science has begun to uncover the profound impact of persistent effort on our minds and bodies. The key player in this process is neuroplasticity, the brain's remarkable ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections. This means that every time we try, whether we succeed or fail, we are literally reshaping our brains. According to neuroscientists, repeated efforts create new neural pathways, making us more resilient and adaptable. This means that even our failures are not in vain; they're part of the process of becoming stronger and more capable. Moreover, psychologist Carol Dweck's research on the "growth mindset" reveals that people who believe in the power of effort—those who see challenges as opportunities to grow—are more likely to succeed in the long run. This mindset isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a fundamental shift in how we approach life. It's about viewing every attempt, regardless of the outcome, as valuable and necessary for our growth.

"I'm not a scientist, this is just my thought. During my time on this earth, I've realized that we are continuously being shaped by our environment. How we turn out hugely depends on what kind of environment we are exposed to. Trying to break free from our environment, to think in a different way, also creates neural activity. Our brain absorbs a lot of information, which I believe is stored in our subconscious mind. Each time we try something new, we are storing information in our subconscious mind, which helps us to problem-solve and become more efficient."

Change is sometimes necessary to find ourselves. Our biggest obstacle is fear. We get afraid, or too lazy to change, finding comfort in routine or familiarity . I would tell myself that every new change in our life will teach us something and make us a better person in the future.
