52, Fat and getting busy
Hi. As my profile says, I did TKD as a kid/teen but then abandoned it when I discovered girls. Well, 30+ years later and my diet plus a desk job plus sedentary hobbies had led me to being outnof breath before reaching the second floor. The new diet and exercise plan my physician put me on has, in addition to everything else (light weights, walking and stationary cycling), 30 mins of ‘patient choice’ exercise three times a week. So here I am!

@Beau Nixon do you get the nagging feeling that you are evolving/transitioning from practitioner to teacher?

@Beau Nixon as the saying goes, to teach is to learn twice.
For the Instructors
Hey everyone, We’ve got a pretty good assortment of martial arts instructors in this group. One thing that i would like to do is have a section that lists out any instructors here that would be willing to work online one on one with students in this group (for a fee of course) If you as an instructor are interested in doing this. Please send me a message here with a quick bio, what you offer and what you charge. I want to help you instructors make some money while also opening the opportunity for students to learn and improve from some great martial artists 💪

@William Schrenk Doug Marcaida was promoting his stick bag a few years back and we had one in our school. It was good for targeting, hitting with the tip, abanikos etc but nothing a thick rope couldn’t cope with, unless you intend to slash it with a sharp knife, in which case you just get more ropes. https://youtu.be/qFCAgNlYOCg?si=uKGZ-xZbiyjf1HG3

Here are some more ideas for targets. Some could be adapted for indoor https://youtu.be/tcohlB6h-yw?si=1syfJyNgdu1Pva9s
What are the core principles of Kali?
What makes kali different to other weapon based arts? Is there a core principle that ties it all together or is it just a bag of cool tricks?

@Adam Gerrald not a fan of blocking so the counter offense resonates with me. The question then becomes when to attack and where your starting position is relative to your opponent. I guess the objective of fencing training is to prepare to compete under a specific set of rules. If non-linear techniques don’t score or don’t work if you’re only allowed to move back&forth, there’s no point practicing them as it won’t help you to win. Having said that, I always favored linear, straight thrusting type attacks over any other. They’re fast, direct and hard to see coming. Very useful for older folk who aren’t that mobile anymore!.

@Adam Gerrald I like that. It's important to have an idea of what you want to do when facing an opponent. I put together something similar for my students as an initial game plan whenever they meet someone they don't know in a competition or dojo sparring context. Mainly for kickboxing&karate type sparring and purposely kept simple as the aim is to get people to start sparring with intention.
Introduce Yourself Here
I'll start. My name is Adam Gerrald, and basically, all I do is train and think about martial arts. I've been training in various styles for a little over 18 years now. Most of my experience is in BJJ, TKD, Kali, and Nunchaku. But I've also done a few years of Muay Thai, Capoeira, and Wing Chun. In January of this year, I began Fencing and I'm having a blast doing that. My current martial arts goals are: Train for Purple Belt IBJJF Worlds in August. Build out my 3 main courses (Nunchaku, Kali, TKD) Build out a Jiu Jitsu Map Library Share a little bit about your past and your current goals.

@Adam Gerrald Ah, I understand what you mean now. I had visualized doing a sinawali drill with a partner with both of us using nunchuks! 😄

@Adam Gerrald single nunchuk against single or even double stick could work.
