Hi everyone,
I’ve recently been offered an internship with a software and digitization company that helps organizations with digital transformation, software development, and tailored digital solutions. They have over 35 years of experience and nearly 300 employees across four global locations.
Internship Role
The internship I was offered would place me in their internal IT department, primarily focusing on the Microsoft Dynamics 365 ERP and Power Platform. Here’s a summary of the tasks outlined in the job description:
- Automating business processes using Power Automate.
- Building dashboards in Power BI to visualize data insights.
- Developing extensions for Business Central using plugins.
My Concern
While I’m excited about the opportunity to learn these platforms, my long-term goal is to transition into a data analytics or data engineering role, ideally using Microsoft Fabric for advanced analytics, data engineering, and visualizations. This role doesn’t seem heavily focused on data analytics, so I’m debating whether it would be the right step or if I should hold out for something more aligned with my career goals.
Questions for the Community
- Is Dynamics 365/Power Platform experience valuable for a future in data analytics? Could skills in Power BI and Power Automate transfer well if I move into a Fabric-focused role?
- What specific skills or tools will I likely gain from this internship? How relevant are these skills for a future data analytics position?
- Are there opportunities to develop data analytics skills within this role? For instance, will I have the chance to work on real data analysis projects, or will it be more focused on implementation and automation?
- Transitioning from ERP-focused roles to analytics: Has anyone here moved from ERP/Power Platform work to data analytics, and if so, what was the learning curve like?
- Should I wait for a more analytics-centered role? Given my long-term goals, would it make sense to keep searching, or could this internship still be a strong stepping stone?
I’d appreciate any advice from those who’ve had similar experiences or insights into the career trajectory from ERP/Power Platform to data analytics!
Thanks for any input!
