Checker board and layer highlighting

All of a sudden seeing this checkerboard pattern in layers and unsure of what has caused this. See

attached.

Also I’ve seen some tutorials where selected layer is highlighted in yellow, mine are not and hard to see which layer I’m on without this highlight.

Could easily YouTube these for an answer, but thought might be better ask here in case others are having same issue.
