I'm trying to revitalize the soil in my backyard for in-ground planting beds, raised beds, a new tree, and shrubs. We are currently in the dead-dirt-lot phase, what would be a good first step in creating living soil here? I watched a "Back to Eden" video on YouTube and loaded up with a bunch of cardboard sheets (thank you, Costco😅) to begin. Compost and woodchip mulch will come after, as will drip irrigation. Is winter a good time to do the cardboard/compost/mulch steps so the soil will (hopefully) be ready to plant in by spring?
