What Makes a Child Actor’s Self Tape Competitive
In the competitive world of child acting, standing out requires mastering the craft of creating memorable characters with clear, unique points of view. Here’s how to make a lasting impression and increase your chances of getting callbacks: Creating Memorable Characters - Backstory: Develop detailed backstories, even if not in the script. - Motivations: Understand your character’s objectives and drives. - Distinctive Traits: Add unique mannerisms, vocal patterns, or gestures. Consistency and Commitment - Stay True: Stick with your character choices throughout the scene. - Emotional Range: Display a wide range of grounded emotions. Offering Two Takes - Grounded Performance: - Realism: Ensure your performance feels natural and authentic. - Connection: Show genuine reactions and interactions. - Distinctive Performance: - Bold Choices: Take risks rooted in the character's truth. - Variation: Provide a contrasting second take to showcase different facets of the character. Self-Tape Tips - Technical Quality: - Lighting and Sound: Use good lighting and clear sound. - Framing: Use a medium close-up to capture expressions. - Preparation: - Rehearse: Practice your scenes multiple times for confidence. - Feedback: Seek feedback from coaches or peers. By focusing on creating deeply memorable characters, offering distinct yet grounded performances, and ensuring technical quality in self-tapes, young actors can significantly increase their chances of securing callbacks. Always remember, the goal is to bring something unique and truthful to each audition, making a lasting impression on casting directors.

Audition Repertoire
Hi! I’ve been updating my audition rep book for musical theatre and I’ve got a pretty solid selection but I’m missing a few categories Currently what I have is Ring of Keys - Fun Home Sixteen Going on Seventeen- Sound of Music Stupid with Love - Mean Girls Somewhere- West Side Story Dance with You- The Prom I Know Things Now- Into the Woods Someone to Watch Over Me- Ella Fitzgerald Girl Scout - Beetlejuice Now Im looking for a pop/rock piece and a Disney piece. I’m 14 and an alto (approx g3-c5 but I’m not entirely sure) If anybody has any suggestions for pieces i should add/take out that would be greatly appreciated.

Leveled Up!
Following recommendations from @Corey Ralston post on self-tapes we added the following to our existing “studio”: NEEWER 13” LED video light panel lighting kit NEEWER Collapsible Backdrop (Blue/Gray) We already use a NEEWER selfie light (but just ordered a bigger one the MFL-06 Pocket-Size Video Light to see if we can eliminate the ring light), a NEEWR Smartphone video rig, and a Rode VideoMicro Microphone. We use an iPhone 13/14 but have ordered a Moment M Series Telephoto 58mm lens to improve the framing. This is what it looked like last night with what we have and the new background and lights. I also wanted to add that we tried two shades of blue and one of gray before deciding on the bottom blue as best for her skin tone. It has definitely improved the clarity, quality, and shadows.

Callbacks
After a callback - is it the norm to be informed if you were not selected for the role or do we just assume from not hearing back? Is it ok to reach out and ask?
