When to learn the fretboard
I’ve been wondering when is the right time to dedicate the brain cells to knowing all the notes on the fretboard. By ‘knowing’ I mean picking a fret on a string (ex: 8th fret on the G string) and knowing what that note is without having the go from open and count G, G#, A… etc until you get to the 8th fret. Is learning this skill a late beginner task, or something sooner or later than that? Thank you 😊

This is phenomenal advice, thank you so much. I pretty much have the 6th and 5th string power chords/barre chords down (in my head if not with my uncooperative fingers), so that is an ok start. Couple of follow up questions if I may: - Major and Minor scales - do you mean starting on 6th string open E (for example) and going Whole Step (F#), Whole Step (G#), Half Step (A), Whole (B), Whole (C#) Whole (D#), Half (E) for major scale? Or the more vertical pattern where you start with your second finger on the root note on the 6th string, then pinky, then index, second, pinky on the 5th string, then index, ring, pinky on the 4th string for major scale (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do)? - When you are practicing the scales, do you name the notes out loud as you go? - Learning how chords are spelled...this one seems daunting - 12 Major chords, 12 minor chords, 7th chords, add9, diminished and augmented chords, sus chords (I think my head just exploded). 🤯 - For 4-string chords - other than D major and D Minor (and Baby F or F Maj7) which 4 string chords do you focus on? Or is this venturing into Triads? 😲 Makes complete sense that notes should have context - so if you want to play a G chord someone other than open, you can find a G,B,D combo elsewhere on the neck to play that voicing of the chord. Thank you again and I truly appreciate your patience with my questions.

Blues shuffle while fingerpicking. I can do an acceptable job with a pick, but struggling to get the shuffle with fingers.

Hi All. I’m Rick and I’m from America’s Hometown, Plymouth Massachusetts. I work for a human services company on Cape Cod. I’m working on Landslide, Fast Car and Blackbird (and Bad Moon Rising from a few weeks ago). I guess I’m struggling with what to work on to get to where I want to go, which is to find that mythical ‘pocket’ and play there.

@Edward Fisher welcome. Looking forward to learning with you. I’ve been playing for a bit less than 2 years and only have 7 guitars, so I see I have to step up my game on that front 😜

Awesome, thank you. Looking forward to watching this tonight. Are these sessions by invitation only, or open to everyone? If they are open sessions, where would one find the info on the site? I looked on the Calendar and there is nothing there. Thank you 😊
Why Guitar?
Hi all. I’m always interested in other folks story and inspiration and motivation. So my question to everyone is why did you pick up a guitar? What inspired you to say - “I want to do this…” For me, though I’ve always loved music, what inspired me to try my hand at the six-string was binge watching the Beatles documentary ‘Get Back.’ Just watching the creative process of random chords being crafted into chord progressions and eventually phenomenal songs had me in awe. I remember thinking - ‘man, I wish I could do that.’ Then I thought, why not? While I’ll never have Fab-4 success, I can certainly get some personal enjoyment. Shortly after that I signed up for music lessons at a local music store, bought a mahogany 000-Bristol guitar, and started building calluses while trying to keep time. How about y’all?
