What’s your mind doing?

Question for

and any other guitar gurus here. When you are playing, what’s your brain doing? For me, I’m mentally saying the strumming pattern in my head (“down, down, up, up, down, up”) or what fingers to use when picking (“thumb, 1, 2, 3, 2, 1” referring to the fingers, not the strings). I can listen to the music/metronome, and sight read the chords to change (or just change on time if I know the song change by memory), but if I think about the words to the song my hands tend to forget what they are doing.

Any tips/tricks would be appreciated.
