Epoxy resins in Powder Coating (facts)
Epoxies resins where the first thermoset powders used in the powder coating industry. They were introduced in the 50’s starting with the Bisophenol A as the first type of epoxy resins. Finishing the 60’s, there was gotten into the market a second Epoxy resin called Novolac. This second resin can be adjusted by the resin manufacturers. All epoxy coatings have poor exterior weathering resistance. These epoxy coats start to chalking and discoloring. Saying that, their use is generally restricted to interior or underground exposures. In order to make them weathering (UV) resistant, they have to be mixed with other resins or used as a primer coat. We are going deep into the epoxy resins, and in other article we can discuss about the Hybrids and other resins that are important in the powder coating industry. Properties Epoxy resins have good mechanical resistant, excellent adhesion and durability. The strong chemical bonding helps create a durable coating that resists chipping, cracking and peeling.
