Hello. I'm Astrid from the Bay Area in California.
I took up dragon boat paddling in 2016 as a way to meet like-minded people and build connections. I’ve always loved being on the water, and joining a team sport seemed like the perfect way to immerse myself in a community. A year ago, I started OC paddling to improve my dragon boat skills, and in hindsight, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It combines my love for nature with staying active. The only challenge is juggling my busy schedule, which requires careful planning to make it all work.

Hi Astrid! Do you paddle in San Mateo Lagoon? I think I saw you there. I recognize your canoe :)

@Astrid Jacob, I live in the Harbortown community on this lagoon, and I often walk my dog on the trail. Let's do WOW together 😃

paddle, paddle, paddle more 😜
Hi, I'm Lana from San Mateo, CA.
My paddle journey started in May 2023. I paddled before that, but it was just for fun and mostly to take a cute photo with my dog. One day, OC6 from the HPOCC club surrounded my paddle board and I joined the club. The amount of adrenaline I experienced in my first-ever race was so high that my body was shaken for five more minutes after the race was over. That was the moment when I understood I wanted more. After the team season was over, I treated myself with a beautiful Cantare. The only issue was I had no idea how to paddle OC1. Tek, I found you on Instagram. We scheduled some 1:1 sessions and a program for me to follow. Over the year, I've made good progress, and still, there is a lot to learn. Paddlesport is quite a big part of my life now. It helps me to be fit, content, and focused, and more importantly, it helps me take care of myself better. I don't have specific goals, but I want to race and be confident in different water conditions, enjoy downwind, and paddle in various locations, especially remote ones like Hawaii.

My 2024 goal was to be consistent with training. There were so many days when I was forcing myself to go and paddle after a not-easy workday. It wasn't easy to combine team and solo practice during the summer. I feel tired all the time, but I continue to follow my training program. We did some adjustments. The result is excellent. My body is stronger than ever, my posture is better, my back pain is gone, and I am not tired all the time, only after a hard workout. I will continue training next year. I want to add cross-training, too, but this part needs some effort 😅 The picture is from the beginning of December; I have added a few more miles since then.
What first brought you into paddling?

I paddle-boarded with my dog in FC Lagoon when I was surrounded by OC6 from the HP club. They invited me to join, and I gave it a try. It clicked. I cannot get enough since then. It also helps me a lot with my mental and physical health—the best way to shake off stress after a work day.

@Tek Li I have always liked water activities, but I wasn’t able to do any until we moved to FC about three years ago. I was trying to buy a kayak, but no kayak was on the market after the pandemic. My friend showed me how to paddle board, and I fell in love with one side blad. It turned out it was easier to buy a paddle. I had paddled in FC lagoon for 8 month before I saw OC6 for the first time and learn about canoeing.
