11/21 Training Check-In
Daily accountability check-in! I have personally been playing on my chess.com account this week slowly increasing my rating on that site and playing some pretty fun games. Some of those games have been added to the Instructive Games Study which can be found under the resources tab in the classroom.

I was put on the white side of the pieces twice today and came out on top 2-0. My first game went out of my prep really quick. After 1.e4 c6 2.Nc3 (trying to head into the Scorpion Horus Gambit) my opponent played b5!? Technically not a losing move (+1.0) but obviously going against all opening principles that say to play in the center. At this moment I took a breath and modified my game plan striking with 3.d4 myself taking firm control of the center and eventually winning the game with my space advantage. Game 2 was added to my Lichess study and it was a Smith-Morra Gambit Declined game. I feel that I have at times struggled a bit with the 3...d3 push by black in this line but I buckled down and made solid developing moves. My opponent again ignored a key early game principle of "Castling your King to Safety Quickly" and because of this allowed for my bishop and knight to coordinate on the dark squares to deliver a fork on c7 winning a clean rook and eventually the game. Check out this game in the study to see where our pieces like to develop in this declined variation of the Smith-Morra.
Chess.com Pairing Tip
When playing on Chess.com you should use the custom feature to set your opponents rating range that you can face. I suggest -100 on the lower end and then +200 or greater on the higher end. This should funnel stronger opponents your way and help you play tougher games! (Within a reasonable range)

Instructive Games Study
I have been adding games to my personal Instructive Games Study on Lichess. https://lichess.org/study/tdAtThez We don't often see 1.c4 as Black (3% of games) even though it is the 3rd Most played opening move behind 1.e4 and 1.d4. Because of this our study time towards that opening can be limited especially as Club players. By replying with the Reverse-Morra (1...d5 2.cxd5 c6) we take white down a path that they are only seeing in 0.1% of their games if they are a 1.c4 player. Our singular sacrificed pawn has now taken our opponent completely out of their opening prep and has not even yielded them a significant computer calculated advantage (+0.6). In practical terms we have stolen the development advantage away from white and have made them play our game. Check out the 2 instructive games I have labeled in the study looking at the Reverse-Morra in order to have some ideas in mind when you next see 1.c4 over the board!

My own commentary has been added to Chapter 14. You can follow along my thought process at the time of the game and reflections after going over the game with an engine.
