Today I attended my first roller skating lesson! I was nervous to sign up because I have been battling that stupid voice in my head that says it's embarrassing to learn something new as an adult. It was so nice having some real world instruction and feedback. The coach was so kind and awesome. I already can't wait until my next session.

Unfortunately no classes at all where I am (except for the one I've just started myself). I'm from Sweden, and the only–as far as I know–physical skate store in this country recently gave up. (OK, they were too far away for me anyway; would have needed a night at a hotel for that trip...) Nevertheless, I'm really committed to work for a revival of roller skating in Sweden! 🙈😁

@Leslie Werner Totally–we'll be here! 🥰 (Or... you go for a teacher who's actually experienced, haha. But I do see that they ARE learning–and gaining confidence–and I keep it all very relaxed and up to them what they feel ready for. As for my advancement of roller skating teaching skills, I'm banking on Sk8shot to be the guru's gurus... 😆)
What's Your Skating Style
Hey Sk8 fam what's your skating style and how did you choose? Did you naturally gravitate to a particular style? Did you study all styles? What styles are out there? What are your go to moves and practice tips for your style? Growing up, I only experienced the style frequently expressed at my local rink and that was mostly "maintaining balance and going fast". Honestly, I can't really identify the local style. But if i had to choose I would say it was close to jam or dance. Lol I'm still trying to navigate the different styles and techniques. Im sure there is a benefit to learning all styles. Help educate me Sk8 fam!

🎶 Groovy style, I guess... 🎶 😁 When I started skating–a looong time ago–in Sweden, there was no knowledge at all available, so we all created our own individual style as best we could. I was more of a dancer, all into the groovy music, whereas a really short and light-weight Asian guy could do incredibly fast moves with his (quite noisy) skates, another guy would do some acrobatics and a couple of girls really fast spins. And a new guy came from Gothenburg and seemed to have a bit of figure skating qualities. So completely different styles to us! 😆

Haha, yeah, that would be something! 🤩 "A bit" far to me from Sweden, though... 😔 Lots of people doing it there? Rinks?
Non-Rink Skater
I have an irrational fear of the skating rink :( I suddenly forget how to skate. I know I’ll have better progress and meet people there. Anyone ever experience that? And how do you get over it?

Nah, I'm the exact opposite: I NEED the music and atmosphere for my skating. With the right music, I feel I can come up with pretty much anything–carried by this magic–and I'm not afraid of anything. Of course it's NOT as nice if it's too crowded, that I do relate to. (But I've never run anybody over, even when there's been lots of kids! 😇)

Hi! Sweden here. I roller skated in the early 80s, but actually only 1–2 years, since all the cool places were suddenly closed – hashtag grief. I did skate a lot, though, and never lost the passion–so when I've been in NYC especially, I've made sure to skate a couple of times in The Roxy. And some time ago there was actually a great rink outside of Stockholm where I took my daughter a few times (unfortunately they played crappy music, otherwise it would have been perfect), but it died during the pandemic. 😔 Now I'm in a part of Sweden where there's no roller skate culture whatsoever, but have decided to make this activity great again! Trying to start a part-time rink, but so far only gotten to give an introduction class (gonna be session 5 this week!). On our first lesson, I made great use of Sk8 Studios thing with starting on a carpet, so brought two long ones from home, and also the penguin process to start them off. Man, did that work out great! Big thank you! So yeah, they'll be the guru's gurus for sure... ❤️❤️❤️ As for me, I've only practised "learning by grooving". 🕺🕺 I do look–and feel–quite free and uninhibited out there, but am in reality not that technical. I haven't actually KNOWN anything about skating until recently, through the internet, although my BODY still does seem to know a thing or two. Now wanna tackle all the weaknesses that are there after all–not least so I can teach these skills, of course! Great place, this! 🤩
