Recording weird things.
What's the weirdest thing you've ever recorded? I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours. Lol 🤣. Mine was flies buzzing around a dog turd. It was for background sound effects at a Halloween party.

@Randall Juhl What I want to know is did the owner of the microphone know (assuming that wasn't you). And.... I hope they weren't the kind of singer that gets too close to the mic LOL

Drum samples.
Is there anyone making their own drum samples? I am making my own by recording the sound of each drum, each cymbal, each rim shot, hi hats open, closed, each shaker (I have lots of them), each cowbell, rattler, soon to be also a Cabasa, and all the notes on the glockenspiel as well as the double-row chimes. Once done with recording, I'll go through and do all the editing and all that other fun stuff that the samples need. This is gonna be a fun project to do. It's an 8 piece set of DW Concept Maple with all new Evans heads along with a 9 piece set of Zildjian Avedis cymbals and other various percussion instruments. Any suggestions on how to make dis happen? Should I bake in the panning information for each track or should I leave them in mono? What would you do? I'd love to hear your opinion. 🤠

I have had a go at this when I was in college, using the college kit. I don't think I went about it systematically enough. I think I would have got better results with the end sampler instrument if I'd planned it better ahead of time and had a sheet for which bit of the recording was meant to be which. I was trying to get different velocity samples for different midi velocities. I probably should have done a lot more post-recording processing with the samples to get the volumes more even so it made more sense when playing it. Still got some cool samples but maybe a project to revisit sometime.

Re panning, I'd suggest pulling all the samples together into a sampler instrument that's panned to your own preferences if the instrument can record that, so you get what you like from it, but making the samples available as mono if you're sharing/selling so that other people can do what they want with them.
Getting !BIG! Guitar Sounds with limited stems
Hey everyone - I'm currently in the process of mixing an EP for a local band, they're great musicians but sent me very limited takes of their guitars. I've got two rhythms & one lead to work with. To get a big "wall of sound" I'm trying a few different methods - copy/pasting from second chorus take to layer onto first chorus, etc. but I'm wondering... Do you have any go-to tricks to "thicken" guitars or build bigger stacks with limited takes? Trying to avoid phasing issues & also stay true to the artistic vision, but I'd love a bigger sound.

I ticked production because I'm struggling to find the time to do it alongside a full time day job and other commitments. I can easily fit in mastering a song for a client, but my own creative time has rather gone out of the window at the moment. I've just taken on a production job for a client, though, in the hope that it will give me a kick start on the production side.
