Product Bets - Round 1 🥊
What's up everyone, was chatting with @Amr Khalifeh this morning about Product Intuition and he came up with a great idea for the community. So let me introduce you to... Product Bets! What's Product Bets? Every few months I'll start a thread where we can all share our bets on some of the more buzzy products that have made their way into the world. In the thread we'll share where we think they'll be in six months time. Then, in six months we'll hop on a call (it's already in the calendar!) and review how we all did! Why? Because we're all cast judgement on products, telling others how we think things'll play out, and this is an opportunity to reflect on if you were right or not! I think this is a great opportunity to see how well tuned our Intuition for space really is, and to improve it again in the future. This round's products will be: - The Rabbit R1 - Apple's Vision Pro - ONCE - Campfire I'll get us started 👇 _____ Rabbit R1: I think the Rabbit R1 will have a strong niche group of enthusiasts, and there'll be a lot of cool use cases for the little device, the over-riding sentiment will still be 'why isn't this an app?'. There's a good chance that Google will release a competitor that does everything the R1 does but is native to Android, and I wouldn't be surprised if they've been acquired by a large tech company six months from now. Apple Vision Pro: I think in six months time, it'll be way too soon to see if the Vision Pro has got any broad market appeal. It's going to continue being heavily meme'd on, as it rolls out in Europe, skepticism will reach a fever pitch and we'll see plenty of people calling the Vision Pro a failure. By this time we'll have seen at least a couple of really compelling use-cases for the technology, but most people still won't have had the chance to try it yet. ONCE - Campfire: Six months from now I think we'll have a clearer picture on if this is actually an applicable solution for product companies. We'll have a solid understanding of the economics and practicalities of rolling this service out. Because it's 37signals it'll probably have a small but highly enthusiastic group of users.

Product Bets - Round 1 🥊

I'm learning about the R1, watching the keynote. The guy has an impressive pitch - 'smartphones have become a way to kill time and not save time'. He's totally right. Having so many apps right there to distract you from what you want to be doing is a problem, and it makes your tasks more complex.
How's your product intuition?
Ever look at a product and feel immediately underwhelmed? You know when you get the sense that something just isn’t going to work from the get go? Of course the opposite is true too, where you hear an idea, download and app, or find a physical product you’re immediately sure it's going to work too. I’ve been thinking a lot about intuition this week, and what the component parts of ‘product intuition’ might be. For me I think the starting point is the offer (what is it, who’s it for), the experience, and the business model - if any of those feel out of whack, then I’m immediately skeptical, but what do ya’ll think? What triggers your spidey sense for products?

I'd never heard of product intuition before but I think mine is decent 😂 IMO it's down to minimising cognitive load. If I can use a product without thinking about it or getting annoyed then it's been well designed. Also, there's a feeling of satisfaction when something that's easy to use also makes life a little bit easier.
What do you do in your downtime?
It's the holiday season, so things are probably starting to quiet down for most of us, so thought it'd be interesting to hear what you all like to do in your down time? I'm pretty terrible for taking downtime, but when I do my go-to activity is gaming, though these days I stick to single player games I can clock in around 40 hours, I find it way too easy to get sucked games and sink 100s of hours otherwise. And when I want to get away from the shiny rectangles for a while, I like to do a bit of woodworking or DIY, or building mechanical keyboards. As for my plans over the holidays, I'll be firing up the PS5 and digging into Spider Man 2. What about you?

I'm also terrible for taking downtime, I feel guilty. To properly take downtime I have to go somewhere away from home because at home there are endless lists of things needing done. Although at Xmas and on my birthday I make sure to spend time doing what I want - it's usually something outdoors like mountain biking or a long walk with the dog.

All very interesting @David Finnegan particularly the custom hardware. I could do with something like that to stop me clicking around and accidentally muting myself when starting / stopping music on a Teams call. Could you post the links to each of the topics?
I'm Jonathan and I love nice products!

I had a look at teenage engineering. That kit looks so cool. I love when form meets function and they do that really well. Rather than making something look nice for the sake of it, make it really functional and beautiful at the same time. Technics SL1200 and Concorde and the classic examples of this I always go to.
