NEW VIDEO - From Apple Maps to Site Plan With Morpholio Trace
This workflow is inspired by Russ Tyson, who shares a lot of amazing drawings like this on his Instagram. His work has inspired many, including me. After studying his techniques closely, I’ve broken down his process into 10 simple steps that you can learn in just 10 minutes.

@Henry Gao I think I need to step my game up — was hoping Procreate was my simple catch all since it’s so quick to turn around sketches/mock ups… but for a scaled engineering deliverable that can stand on its own as a site plan for clients & pre-app at the jurisdiction, I probably need to go with Morpholio as a faster/easier alternative to CAD (and then import this line work to Civil3D for more specific construction drawings)
Site Layouts / Concept Plans
I'm on the land development/engineering side of things, but I want to incorporate my iPad as a faster way to create "constraints maps" -- they are high level GIS views that incorporate overlays, call outs, and other graphics to visualize the value of projects. Used to determine construction & financial feasibility as well as get buy in from investors/potential partners. Think Procreate can handle this job?

@Henry Gao Thanks! Yes, need to work at scale (both in presentation graphics and in design) while also integrating with CAD line work (Civil3d) and GIS maps. Most comfortable with Procreate, and inspired by your grid templates & professional power-workflow.
Sketch up for Construction Docs?
Hello, I am an architect who retired after a 30-year career with the NYS housing agencies but want to keep dabbling in a few projects a year. Currently I have a professional office to home conversion project that I drafted with Morpholio Trace. MT is a great program, but I was stretching its limits using it this way. I’d like to invest in and learn Sketchup and am wondering if it would work well as a drafting program. It would be great to stay in one program for 2D drafting and 3D modeling. I’d like to stay with an iPad platform, so I am also wondering how Sketchup for iPad compares to the desktop version. I never fully learned Autcad and feel it is too robust and complicated to justify investing in it. PS: I do not have a photo of my work space, if I did post one, it would be a picture of an iPad as I work wherever convenient and comfortable.

@Amy Holms 100% especially when there are tons of "VIF" comments in the drawings ;)

@Dave Olufs I've run $100M+ projects with a sharpie + cardboard box back in the day
Land Developer & Construction Manager
I’m no architect, but I visualize construction projects with conceptual illustrations…drawing out possibilities with investors/owners and taking co-created designs as far as I can before bringing in the official engineers & architects. I’ve worked throughout the DC Metro, Seattle, and now growing my real estate development firm in Charleston, SC.

@Dave Olufs starts with a simple subdivide. Then conceptualize what will be built. And manage by clarifying construction drawings with the architect & engineers as well as trade partners in the field. Just a day in the life.

@Dave Olufs procreate, sketchup, autodesk for design… buildertrend & procore for management
Introduce yourself and share a photo of your workspace
Hey there, it's Henry Gao! 👋 I'm based in the Bay Area, California, hanging out with my lovely family - two kiddos and our golden retriever boy. Though I did the whole architecture school thing in both Canada and the U.S. (yeah, twice!), I discovered that teaching is my true calling in life. Drawing has always been a passion of mine, and now, I've seamlessly transitioned from pen and paper to the wonders of the iPad. When I'm not busy shaping young and old minds, you can find me hitting the trails for a run, exploring nature on hikes, or catching up with our church family. My goal here is to ignite your interest in the iPad scene. But I'm not just about design and drawing! If you've got any burning questions or just want to chat about life beyond architecture, shoot me a message. I'm all ears and ready to share whatever wisdom I can offer. ✨

Have any experience or advice on the development side? The quest is always to balance beauty with high-performance buildings and making a profit…
