Found a bug that seems to have bricked my account :|
Hey all! So I currently cannot use my account at all 🫠 I was trying to find something in the settings, clicked the wrong thing, and wound up back at the matchmaking process for finding potential clients that you get when you first set up your Willa account. As I had no way to get out of it — even moving to a different browser didn't help — I just blazed through it, skipping all the prompts hoping that my account wouldn't be affected. But noooowww, I'm still stuck in that setup process, frozen on step 3 where you would typically find your first match. 1) Is there any way my account can be restored to how it was, before November 21st? And... 2) Can you please fix the bug that led me down this path? Me getting stuck on that very first setup screen happened to me once before, right when the beta came out, but I managed to get out of it somehow without affecting my account. I'm honestly really surprised this is something that hasn't been fixed — granted I should've said something then, but regardless, why can't you just go to the previous page if you accidentally go to that starting process? Also, happy thanksgiving to those that celebrate !!! :)

A potential client wants me to do location scouting for their shoot before hiring me 🫠 (+ feedback for Willa)
Fellow producers, directors, DP’s and videographers, how much of a red flag is this? I work primarily as an editor so I’m not too familiar with pre-production. Most of my coworkers are saying this is no bueno (so it probably is), but I’m interested in hearing some other perspectives. Also, @Aron Levin some feedback, but maybe it would be handy to have categories for different industries on here? General discussions or questions for graphic designers, photographers, videographers, etc. Or maybe there’s a neater, possibly more detailed way to organize different subjects within the community that I’m not aware of.

@Aron Levin My concern is that they’ll have me spend a whole bunch of time on location scouting, then bail on me for another freelancer since they haven’t officially hired me (when normally they’d hire before to any pre-production). The risk there is really just that there would’ve been all that time spent, when I could’ve been bidding on other projects or reaching out to prospects. Not really sure if that’s something I want to risk even though I do want to take on this project.

@Lawrence Braun For context, I made an Upwork account since it’s been very slow for me this year, and this would be my first client through that service. Normally I just get work through the producers or agencies I know locally, but even then, like I said, I work primarily as an editor so pre-pro (in the client world at least) is relatively new territory for me. And you mention being paid for the work — that’s the thing, they haven’t officially hired me and there haven’t been any contracts yet. For whatever reason they haven’t given me a budget for the locations and want me to present them with a list of options including prices before deciding if they want to hire me. Presumably because they want to have the option to decide between freelancers and go based on who has the better location. Plus, they want me to pay for the location then reimburse me through Upwork, which feels strange since Upwork has a 20% fee on top of any payments. Why wouldn’t they just pay the owner of the location directly?
Advice on diversifying client base amid a downturn + any additional insight???
Hey! Glad to have joined this community, and I'm looking forward to see how it'll grow :) I'm a video editor, based in Pittsburgh and I'm two years into freelancing. When I started, I was super fortunate to have found a great agency and get on board with them as a contracted video editor right as things were getting super busy. Because of their overabundance of work, I barely turned anything down from them, and had all my eggs in that one basket. It was great while it lasted, but because of this, I never really worked on growing my list of clients as much as I should've, and this year has been rough so far for myself and many others in the video and ad side of things. The agency I'm with is barely getting any work, and no other existing clients of mine have anything. The economy and uncertainty from the ad and tech side seemingly halted spending in a large chunk of the video industry and all that on top of the writers strike doesn't seem to be helping either ://// So would anyone like to share some advice? Insight? General info to add on top of any of this? How are others involved in the video and ad industry dealing with the downturn, or have you noticed an uptick in work? It seems to be slowly picking back up based on what I've heard, but I'm still not experiencing the effects of that 🫠🫠🫠

@Aron Levin Really great insight! I appreciate it. Also, just got around to starting that dream clients list and I'm definitely noticing a theme 👀👀👀

Yullo 👋 I'm Christian, I'm a video editor based in Pittsburgh. A lot of what I do is on the buttoned up corporate and marketing side of things, but I'm looking to get more involved in creative and bold video — a lotta the artsier, visually striking marketing and advertising work. Also, you can check out some of my work on my website, xtianconnolly.com or reach out to me on my IG @ christian.ccnnllyy :) (Also, speaking of Instagram, I actually have a separate account that I intended to be a more professional and artistic channel to show off what I do, but I always forget about it. Anyone think I should just ditch it and make my personal IG an all-in-one?)
