@Elizabeth Glee Devereaux I play Loree Royal oboes..a grenadilla and a violetwood one. In grenadilla, it is a bit heavier than a regular Loree and in general not as ‘light’ sounding as the AK model (whose reputation is as a sweet sounding oboe). If you are a second oboist, make sure the ‘heftiness’ and powerful sound of the Royal is not overwhelming especially if the section principal is playing on something like rosewood or violetwood. I have also owned several Howarths over the years and regardless of the model, I found the keywork (which is wonderful) to be placed differently especially b, a, g than the Lorees, so you would need to adjust to that difference. For me, the Yamaha, 841, has the most solid and reliable scale of all the oboes that have passed through my hands…a real bonus and the Lorees have been the most temperamental. Just my 2 cents.
Q & A with Erin Brophey December 4th, 2025
This was a terrific session. Many thanks to @Dorothy Rubinoff for getting us started on a robust conversation about concert prep. I have such gratitude to @Miriam Carpinetti for sharing her new piece for oboe and English horn. (Music below in the comments) Kudos to @Carol Lowne for asking such a timely question about the tuning A.

@Erin Brophey does it have an mp3 that Miriam can share?
Color²
Just curious: what color of sound do you want to hear from your oboe? Erin mentioned purple as her sound color, I myself strive for burgundy. How about you?

@Jill Cathey i isentify with ‘white’ on these recordings Jill….probably because it is the only one I’ve ever played.
Bach in concert!
For those who are curious, this is the recording of Bach (105). We had a long rehearsel before and I was tired already. Too bad...But I enjoyed anyway! https://youtu.be/l6oC95EVmto?feature=shared

Magda, this was beautiful. I loved the way you leaned into the phrasing and created just the right atmosphere for this lovely piece. Gorgeous.

Does anyone have any recommendations for articulation on this? I’ve heard recording where they’ll slur the 6 16th notes that go down the scale but that doesn’t help with that nasty second measure (third measure of the piece)

Can’t remember what we did but the good news is that it looks like a unison nasty passage so you could feel free to mess up.and when the conductor glares at the section, turn calmly and point to ob 2 … or if you are ob 2.. stare at the conductor and shrug your shoulders..:ob 1 is in charge after all…Just kidding.. I’ll be interested to hear Erin’s input.

Love the Oboe Path… playing with Joy… still trying to find ‘Ease’… play in a lovely Community Orchestra in Upstate NY (EH and ob 2).
