@Kc Kaleo dope! Here’s a cover cropping resource for the Nevada high desert: https://extension.unr.edu/publication.aspx?PubID=3466

@Kc Kaleo if you grow regular ol veggies and what not, but are not planning on growing this winter, the OSB Plowdown mix they used would be my suggestion as a trial run. It’s got a solid mix of legumes (for nitrogen fixation) and grasses (for carbon and organic matter building)
Book and Documentary Recommendations
Hi y’all! Dennis posted a video the other day that got me thinking about the importance of media when sharing knowledge about living soil. Soil, in my opinion, is often something that’s overlooked, so giving it a face with documentaries and well-written scientific narratives is hugely important for sharing with more diverse audiences. - What documentaries have you seen about living soil? - What books have you read? - Any resources y’all want to share that tell good stories about soil microbes that were easy to digest? I’ll include my recs in the comments below ⤵️

I was brought into the living soil world by a documentary almost a decade ago called In Search of Balance (2015). That led me to Daphne Miller’s book, Farmacology. Since then, I’ve mostly been studying pretty scientifically rigorous stuff. I’d be crazy if I didn’t mention Braiding Sweet Grass even though it’s not specific to soil. I’ll give an honorable mention to The Need to Grow documentary also.

Welcome! How different is the climate between where you are in NC and where you were in Mass?
My intro
I was born in Germany and remember my family always living from the land. Vegetables, fruit, jams, canned everything and as I grew older I found myself creating my own garden everywhere I lived until I met Michelle. She had a garden with worms and that's how it all started. Worms, worm castings, soil biology, and now living soil.

@Dennis Wichter Nice! My dad just moved out that way and is trying to run the garden at his job. I’m doing remote consults with him trying to teach him along the way, so it’s good to know there are other folks out there doing the good work!

@Dennis Wichter about three or four 6’x4’ beds for veggies and herbs, and like 6-8 fruit trees
Composting
I just recently put my garden to bed as the temps have dropped over this past week. I compost all my garden waste and turned the previous compost out to my future garden. Do you make your own compost or buy it? What do you add to your compost?

I love making my own compost! At the scale I grow I do have to source some supplemental supplies, but I mix it with my homemade supply before amending my beds. In my experience, the compost works better when it’s homemade, presumably because the microbes are adapted to my specific microclimate. What I add depends on the season, but I’m pro composting everything other than noxious weeds (ie bermuda, nutsedge) as a general rule of thumb
