Q & A with Erin Brophey DEcember 18th, 2025
This was a fun session! Thank you for all your excellent questions about orchestra etiquette @Carol Lowne . It was great to meet @Caroline Grieve and discuss cracking instruments and ways to keep them warm. @Anni Pinomaa had a great question about counting rests while swabbing. Thank you all. See you all in 2025. Happy Holidays to everyone!

Thank you for lovely "real life" examples! This is really helpful, especially when the other members are living in cold climate as well! 💗 About counting bars: Very often the flute part is written is the music as cue, but if you play 2nd oboe, you can't hear flute at all. I sometimes look at her fingers to see when she is starting. (The flutists have explained me this: Good quality flutes have a soft sound and cheap flutes often have a bright sound. Flute is also pointing to the right, away from the oboes). 😊

Thank you @Erin Brophey for finger exercise tips! I repeat it here to find it later: trill exercises to play trills evenly, and keeping the fingers soft and gentle. @Natalie Fulwider showed the gadget to expand the fingers. I have been squeezing fingers too much, especially during the gardening season when the fingers become strong. @Carol Lowne told about many different ways to use octave keys and half-hole, to have a relaxed movement. Thank you all, I have to watch this video again!
Leleux
Okay, I went back and looked up a youtube with Leleux, and I'll have to slow it down to see about the fingering! But this particular video was unique - if you scroll to about 10:30, he actually CONDUCTS with the oboe! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE24eN-39T4

@Magda Prins-Nip This seems to be a covid time performance.

Some time ago I saw this Leleux interview/discussion in YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WO6GYYRPOY Somehow it resembles these discussions which take place here at Oboe School!

Sorry for a late answer. But I have two oboes: Marigaux 901 (from 1990's) and Bulgheroni Opera (2010, automatic octaves). Marigaux has been overhauled but still it is not like new any more. Bulgheroni has a couple of cracks which open during winter. But this only makes some buzzing noise, so I can use it at home. Last spring it became suddenly very good - I don't know why! These instruments can surprise you every day!
News from southern Finland 🎵
Hi! I am so happy to meet other oboists here! Today we have independence day in Finland, and our amateur orchestra played Sibelius Finlandia in a local church in Helsinki. This is a tradition and occurs every year. And one week ago we had a great concert with another orchestra: First Wagner overture from Tristan and Isolde, at the end Isoldes Liebestod, and Wesendonk songs in between. There I had the opportunity to play 1st oboe, and it felt really stunning. We also played Brahms 3rd symphony, where I had 2nd oboe part. So this has been a great season! Now I have utilized some learnings from Oboe Hub lectures. The most important has been: how to hold your back straight. The back should not be bent (straightened) forcefully, but the action comes from internal musculature. Blowing helps this to happen. Have a nice evening!

Thank you Magda! We play European scraped reeds. Sometimes I order them from UK, and try to make my own reeds accordingly. And recently I have tried to learn the German style from Youtube videos.
