How to overcome fear, uncertainty, and perfectionism (cold calling)
Hey everyone, We’ve got a bunch of new faces in our sales community— welcome! 👋 I've been getting a ton of messages lately asking if cold calling is still relevant. Spoiler alert: it is. But let's be real, it's easy to get caught up in fear, uncertainty, and the dreaded perfectionism. Wanna know how I deal with it? Here are 4 things I keep in mind: 1. Become more mindful and realize when you’re overthinking things. Seriously, sometimes I catch myself spiraling just because I don't want to pick up the phone. Sometimes I freeze up when thinking about the hypotheticals “They’ve told me no before” or “they’re probably not even interested”. When you’re in your head you’re dead. So, start working towards the skill of becoming self aware. 2. Understand why you’re overthinking. Was it that last rejection? Let’s face it rejection sucks, but this is why we get paid the big bucks. Get over it and make the damn dial. Are you worried you won’t know what to say? Many salespeople I’ve been chatting with think they need to have a “perfect” script. No, what you need is a framework that guides you through the entirety of the call. Whatever the reason you’re overthinking, get to the root cause and tackle it head-on. 3. Making a cold call is just a small decision. Yep, it’s not the end of the world. The worst thing they can do is yell at you and hang up, and guess what? You'll survive. More importantly, each call you make moves you closer to your goals. 4. Overthinking has bigger consequences than you’d think. Dealing with “call reluctance” can ultimately lead to “analysis paralysis”. Heres the issue with that, being in a perpetual state of analysis paralysis can mess up your nervous system and even lead to anxiety, stomach issues, high blood pressure, or panic attacks! Not fun. To recap: become more self-aware, diagnose why you’re overthinking things, and realize that you’re just a small decision away to moving closer to your goals. What has helped you overcome fear, uncertainty, and perfectionism to be more impactful on the phones? Let's hear your thoughts below! 👇
