Thinking of Leaving Your 9-to-5 for Full-Time Videography? Do This First
Are you dreaming of breaking free from your 9-to-5 and diving headfirst into the world of videography? Before you make that leap, there’s one essential step you need to take first—something that will set you up for success and spare you from costly mistakes. When I started my videography business, I made the classic mistake of jumping in cold, thinking I could figure it out as I went. I quit my job, took the plunge, and…found myself drowning. In that first year, I lost over $21,000 just trying to survive. I was scrambling to find clients, fighting to keep up with bills, and it felt like my dreams were slipping away. The heartbreak and the financial hit were one thing, but the toll it took on my mental state was overwhelming. I felt like a failure, constantly questioning if I’d made a huge mistake. The truth is, trying to launch a business without a support network makes an already challenging journey so much harder. Looking back, I wish I had started with my “inner circle”—friends, family, and friends of friends. These are the people who know you best, who are more likely to offer support, give feedback, and even pay for your services. Testing your skills and services with them not only builds confidence but gives you valuable experience that can help you expand to a wider audience over time. Before you make the big decision to leave your day job, start by laying a solid foundation with these warm leads. Build some momentum, and then transition into full-time work once you’re in a stronger position. Trust me, this approach makes all the difference and turns a risky leap into a smooth transition.

[INSIGHTS] Sending raw files to a client...
Firstly, do you do this? Comment below. Secondly, if you do, do you just send the files and leave it? Or do you provide a document explaining how to use the files? I mention this because we rarely send raw files to clients, but on the rare occasions that we have, it has been disastrous. We receive constant emails back and forth about the videos being “grey” and lacking “colour” (since they are shot in log). Their “video editor” can’t seem to use the files or sometimes can’t even open them… The list goes on and on. So, what we decided to do is create a one-pager that explains what they will be receiving, how they can use the files, what to expect, and how to fix common issues (because they always encounter the same problems). Since implementing this, we rarely have clients who ask for raw footage come back complaining. Let me know if you want a copy of it, and I’ll share it exclusively in this community 🦾
