I found a short reel of a Nicki Minaj interview with Elliot where she expounded on how much the industry has drastically changed over the course of her career. She stated that record labels are opting to sign popular acts over the most talented ones. I thought about it 🤔... and it makes perfect sense because if that talent doesn't have a following, it can't be profitable to the labels. Back in the g, labels would shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars on an artist's development. Nowadays, they seem to prefer for the talent to come already developed with a nice following attached to it. I know this is probably common sense to y'all, but I still find this to be an interesting bit of info
