Squatting is by far the most underrated exercise in the gym. It’s the king of all exercises - functional and otherwise. I recommend everyone incorporate some form of free squat (no smith machine or hack squat) into their daily routine.
You’ll not only build total body strength from legs to hips to back to core but also burn more calories than you could doing almost every other exercise (barring olympic style power lifts).
If you want to get stronger, squat. If you want to get leaner, squat. If you want abs, squat. If you want to be more functional, squat. If you want to burn more calories, squat.
The variations are endless. I personally front squat with a barbell. My back is in more of a upright position and it has a greater focus on core strength. I started doing it 3-4 years ago and love it.
Back squats are the most common. If you’re new to the gym you can certainly do bodyweight squats or some less load focused holding a kettlebell or dumbbell. Find some variation and incorporate it into your routine. You’ll thank me later.
