On Sundays we rest
Do you have a day or time of day dedicated to rest?
There was a time when rest was not in my vocabulary.
Having to be productive every minute of the day felt like I was being driven by a motor I wasn't controlling.
That pesky, powerful, and protective nervous system is always operational. It reads the room before I do, it signals danger (newsflash it has little discernment), and survival is its one and only job.
Feeling guilty for sitting down? BAM! The body gets up before I can reason with it to relax.
Feel uncomfortable in the quiet and stillness? BAM! Rev that engine, which didn't take much, the system was standing by in low ready.
I did quite a bit to recover from this hamster wheel of constant hypervigilence but intention and effort is still required.
I just finished 12 straight days of work.
Have you seen the mess with CA wildfires lately?
I am beat to the socks but believe it or not it still requires mindfulness for me to rest. Sitting still is not natural for me.
So effort I do because I've seen the benefit of rest.
The mind gains clarity (unless I'm distracted by a screen) and the body powers down to recharge. When I add reflection and gratitude the brief resting moments feel like the RESET I didn't know I needed.
