How to Handle Highs and Lows
I still remember the THRILL of winning Performance of the Night in Manchester about a decade ago.
It's as clear in my mind as if it happened just yesterday...
That moment felt like hitting the jackpot.
I mean, the UFC handed me a $50,000 bonus, and back then, that was a fortune to me.
I used to think making 30 grand a year was pretty good, so you can imagine how huge this felt.
Life was on a high. I was out celebrating, living it up, and things just seemed perfect.
I had recently met the woman who's now my wife, and everything just clicked.
But life has a way of throwing curveballs...
About five years later, in the same Manchester arena, I got knocked down in just 21 seconds.
That hit me hard... really hard.
Even now, talking about it brings back a flood of emotions.
It was more than just a physical knockdown; it felt like my whole world got turned upside down.
Not long after, I had probably one of the most profound conversations I've ever had with my close friend Nigel.
Nigel's a bit older and much wiser than me, and so he was able to give me a new perspective.
He's lived through a lot and he told me something I'll never forget:
"When things are going great, they're never as perfect as you think. And when they're bad, they're never as terrible as they seem."
It's a simple idea, but it's powerful.
It's about keeping a level head. Not getting too caught up in the highs or the lows.
It's all about controlling your emotions, staying steady no matter what life throws at you.
Like that old Chinese proverb about the boy and the horse – you never really know how things will pan out.
The highest highs and the lowest lows, they're just part of the journey.
Find your balance and ride through it all.
