Dr. J. Vernon McGee was one of the most honest Bible Teachers of the 20th Century. There are lots of things this Ph.D. of Theology would go head to head with him over, BUT I am confident I could have held a civil and productive conversation with him.
Understanding the context of Scripture was a deep seeded passion for him and I just cannot help but think he was ahead of his time.
If we'd have been able to discuss the timing of Galatians being written right after the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15 and how verse 21 [“For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.”] and verses 24&25 [24 “We understand that some men from here (in Asia and probably Galatia) have troubled you and upset you with their teaching, but we did not send them! 25 So we decided, having come to complete agreement, to send you official representatives, along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,] show us that the messengers were to remind them when and where Moses was preached, that letters would be sent and Paul and Silas would follow ARE ALL RELATED to Paul's Testimony in Acts 24 where he said the accusations of 21:28, were false and he was NOT teaching everyone everywhere to ignore Torah...*
Well, I just cannot help but believe he would have been of humble enough ego to agree and change a great deal of his Theology to reflect this. THAT is how confident I am in his character.
*Acts 21:28 the accusations against Paul:
28 yelling, “Men of Israel, help us! This is the man who preaches against our people everywhere and tells everybody to disobey God's laws. He speaks against the Temple—and even defiles this holy place by bringing in Gentiles.”
*Acts 24:13&14 is Paul's testimony about the accusations:
13 "These men cannot prove the things they accuse me of doing. There is no evidence."
14 “But I admit that I follow the Way, which they call a cult. I worship the God of our ancestors, and I firmly believe all of God's law and everything written in the prophets."
Dr. McGee would have gotten it. I am certain of this. So I don't feel badly using the good meat of his work and spitting out what can now prove was bones, as I believe after having some contextual conversations with him, I could have shown him without a doubt there were areas where his work lacks the evidence we can now easily and readily provide.
See you DEC 1, 2024 @ 2:30pm CST (go to the Calendar to get to the video chatroom) for the discussion about Armageddon!! Bring some coffee, tea, soda and snacks. This will be a very informal online chat!!
