Over the last few months, I’ve been ramping up my editing skills and also my portfolio
One of my favorite YouTubers is hiring for a short-form editor and I’ve got my eyes on the prize
I will be documenting my steps and giving you guys updates as I get closer to landing this role
And this wont just be generic strategies. These are highly effective, tactical methods with proven success. And I’m sharing it all with you today
So without further ado…
Here are the steps I’m taking
1️⃣ You want to win? Take the path less traveled
When applying for any job, there are always going to be HUNDREDS if not thousands of applicants
Assume you have the same skills, experience, and portfolio as every other person on the list.
Why should YOU be hired?
If you’re playing this game, it’s basically a lottery. Nothing but random luck if you want to be hired
So here’s my system (and exactly what I’m doing) to apply to my dream role
- Do something unique that none of the other applicants would do
- Send them a personalized DM or email stating your goals and also how you can help them
- Share with them the unique project you did so that you stand out
In my case, I wanted to do a re-edit of one of their videos. But that’s too easy, anyone can do that
So what am I doing instead?
I’m doing a complete RESHOOT of one of their videos. Shot for shot, edit for edit
This will not only stand out to the potential client as a unique idea, but also it’ll show I have to skills required for the role
After I do this, I’ll find either the client or their hiring manager and send them an email introducing myself along with the reshoot
(I’ll post it here once I finish the edit)
2️⃣ You will learn what you don’t know from others that do know
Part of this whole process has been working with a coach to sharpen up my skills
has been my coach for the past several weeks and he’s been incredible. We’ve had roast sessions to improve my edits, calls where he shows me valuable resources to learn more, and strategy sessions to create plans (like the one mentioned above) to land bigger clients
He seriously has so much knowledge and if you’re looking to boost your editing game, it would definitely be a worthwhile investment to work with him.
And
3️⃣ Edit Something Daily
For the past two months I’ve made a daily shortform video
This has been a tough process but every day I get faster and I learn more tricks to improve my editing.
With these three steps combined, I’m confident that I have a shot at getting hired for this dream role
I’ll keep you guys updated, but I’m feeling good about this one
