How to survey your audience

Hey! I'm looking for inspiration and advice on how to best survey my audience about what they want help with right now. In all the years I've been around I've never actually done this (I know, I know, really weird).

I'm thinking of going with some pre-determined categories and the keeping an "other" option open where they can respond to my email with what they want help with if it doesn't fall into the categories provided. Any pros/cons doing it this way or what to think of to ensure I get the best response rate AND that the answers are actually helpful?
