Seven-Day Free Trial: What Actually Happens Behind the Scenes?
Okay, so I’m excited to see the buzz around the new seven-day free trial now available for our communities!
I’ve got a few questions, and I thought, if I’m wondering about this, maybe others are too.
So here goes! If this has been covered somewhere, this could be a great spot to clarify and share ideas.
First off, what actually happens when someone clicks the seven-day free trial?
Do they have to enter their payment details right away?
And after the seven days, does it automatically deduct from their bank?
Will they get reminders, or are they just charged after the trial?
I’m asking because I can see how people might forget and then come back asking for refunds—and let’s be honest, none of us want that.
We want people to stay and get value, not feel blindsided by an unexpected refund charge.
So, how are people working around this?
And does anyone know the logistics of how it actually flows?
Second, when does it make sense to use a free trial, and when doesn’t it?
For one of my mid-ticket communities, I’m thinking of using a free trial as a one-time event—not an evergreen option, but more as a launch strategy.
The idea would be to open it up for a limited seven-day free trial period, get a large group in at once, make it a high-value, high-energy week, and give them solid reasons to stay on after the trial ends.
And then, maybe a countdown or reminder like, “Your free trial ends on XYZ” to help with retention.
So those are my ideas!
