A lot of people ask me, “I’ve tried cold emailing in the past, but it didn’t work. What can I do instead?” The truth is, it’s not about the type of outreach you do—whether it’s cold emailing, calling, or DMing—it’s about how you do it. If you don’t grasp the fundamentals, no outreach method will give you the success you're looking for. Let me explain the right way to approach outreach.
How to Do Outreach Effectively:
Lead with Value:
9 out of 10 times, successful outreach starts by offering value before pitching anything. For example, in my outreach, I’ve provided feedback on ads clients were running, or I helped them with a system issue. If I had nothing specific to offer, I’d even give away a free month of ads to gain trust and learn from the experience.
If you’re just starting, humble yourself. You need experience first. Don’t be afraid to offer something for free to build credibility.
Follow Up with a Call or Meeting:
Once you’ve given them something of value, ask for a Zoom call or an in-person meeting to discuss things further. By the time they’ve received value from you, they’re more likely to trust you. That’s when you can start talking about your services.
Personalize Your Outreach:
Show genuine interest in their business. Whether it’s through compliments, insights, or small gestures of value, let them know you’ve taken the time to understand what they need.
Alternative Outreach Methods:
LinkedIn DMs:
This is one of the best outreach channels, especially when automated. You'll need LinkedIn’s paid subscription and software for automation, but the investment can be worth it. If you want details about the software I use, just DM me.
Cold Calling:
Believe it or not, cold calling is the most effective outreach strategy in many industries. I avoided cold calling for a long time, but once I got over my fear, the results were undeniable. I got my first client after only 25 cold calls. Compare that to cold emails, where it took 1,000 emails to get just 5 to 10 calls. Cold calling converts faster—1 in 25 vs. 1 in 200. Instagram & Facebook DMs:
I don’t have much experience here, but I’ve seen it work for others. Give it a shot if you haven’t yet.
The Napoleon Method:
Think of Napoleon’s military strategy—he didn’t conquer just one country, he went after many. Use this mindset in your outreach. Don’t stick to one method, try them all and give each method your full effort. You’ll increase your chances of landing new clients.
Takeaway: If cold emailing isn’t working for you, it might not be the method itself, but how you're approaching it. By leading with value, being genuine, and diversifying your outreach, you'll see much better results.
