Helvetica or Times?
You're facing a terrible choice. The world is devoid of typefaces, fonts have been dissolved into faint memories. Those glorious font selection menus cut down to a binary. Written communication persists, though; even though the selection is slim, you have options: Times New Roman or Helvetica. For all time. Which font will you use in all applications, forever? Why?

Helvetica or Times?

At my first job circa 2011, it was a ‘sackable offence’ to use Helvetica as a brand typeface. They were joking, but we got the message. Type has a story beyond utility and functionality that shouldn’t go overlooked. I think there’s more story, culture and history in the serifs of Times. And I do like a newspaper.

@Kristen Hus interesting and cool, but rarely beautiful. Sounds like my 20s. Well put!

Hi I’m Tristan. I work and live in London, UK. I work in commercial branding and graphic design as a design director and brand consultant. There’s an elegance to a well-executed visual and verbal identity that’s kept me hooked since art school. Type is a big part of my life. But I write in block capitals. I don’t think I’ll ever really know if my kerning is optimised. Saul Bass, Alan Fletcher and Gilbert and George are some of my favourite designers. My favourite quote is the one from Paula Scher: “words have meaning, type has spirit” Glad to be here!
