Why do you grow food?
For me it was all about the taste. Why do you grow your own food? Here is a study that looked at nutrient loss from UC Davis.

Health, mental (connection with nature) and nutritional and its probably one of the most revolutionary and important activities you can engage in ( building soil). Awesome study, anyone familiar with similar ones that have verifiable results in the different micro-nutrient levels of commercial produce vs, from regenerative practices?

@Dennis Wichter That newer study you linked was great. I mentioned regenerative, because as mentioned in that article, organic farms can be tilling and degrading the soil. I haven't come across many studies that link the current global epidemic of obesity and chronic illness with conventional food production but it seems obvious to me. I know many 'experts" have mentioned how supplementing with vitamins and supplements isnt really effective as our bodies are used to obtain these micro nutrients from food. Imagine going to the store and the produce listing the levels of micro nutrients! Its crazy to think about, but like Bill Mollison said, most of the worlds problems can be solved in a garden.

9/10 ... what is the answer to the earthworm question?
How do you get rid of weeds?
I don't know much about landscaping fabric but I can see how a synthetic product could have harmful chemicals in it and I have definitely seen it degrade over time. Some plants like Bermuda grass can be tough to deal with. I have seen where 2 layers of cardboard and 4 inches of wood chips wasn't enough to keep it from growing. Maybe a chemical solution is the answer but you have to understand what is happening and how to fix the problem you create when using chemicals. https://www.thecooldown.com/green-home/reddit-landscaping-fabric-problems-grass-slope-yard/

my herb garden has been taken over by bermuda grass. tried mulching and it came back. the only sure proof method I have heard of is to go scorched earth, and removed everything, put plastic over the area and heat it up to kill everything. would love to hear any solutions for an established garden......
Raised bed gardening
I was thinking about doing some raised beds just to make it easier for my back has anybody on here done that and if you have could you please post some pictures and ideas especially if it's a DIY yourself build which is what I'd really like to do thank you

The earth box systems work well and are great for condos or container gardening. Lots of people DIY with IBC totes as an economical solution as you can get them for almost free sometimes.
Intro
Aloha! I just bought a condo with a yard. I’m in Kihei Hawaii so fortunate enough to be able to grow year round. Just got a fence and a bunch of organic soil to start my garden. Should I get mulch or (?) to put down prior to the soil for drainage. The dirt on the property is the red variety that drains easily. Appreciate any insights! Can send photos as well. 🤙🙏

I lived on the big island years ago and volunteered on some farms there. Also in the tropics in south america. Tropical ecosystems are different that temperate ones in that most of the nutrients are actually kept in the plants, as opposed to the soil, mainly due to the amount of rain that constantly washes through. Mimicking the natural ecosystem always works best and requires the least amount of input, so maybe a mini food forest where you are chopping and dropped the bigger grow to constantly feed the soil.
