The Epiphany That Changed Everything
Two weeks ago, something unexpected happened during a coaching call with a long-time client. He said, "We spend so much time working on me, but I just realized—I don’t know your story." That one question led to a 45-minute discussion about my journey. By the end, he summed it up in a way that left me stunned: "Wait a minute—you barely got into university, landed your first job at IBM in Finance, left that to become a teacher and moved to England. Then you returned to Toronto for your MBA, almost became a management consultant, and instead joined FirstService in a Manager role. Fast-forward 10 years, and you were a named executive in your 30s?" I paused, then said, "Yes." What he said next hit me like a ton of bricks: "Let’s stop wasting time on getting me my next promotion. Teach me how to become an executive because I don’t know where to find that coaching." Then came the follow-up question that made me reflect: "Why would you leave your executive role when you were doing so well?" I told him the truth: "The years were starting to blur together, and my children were at an age where I wanted to be there for them before they grew too fast. My wife was excelling in her career, and I wanted to support her. My mind was also changing as I worked on my doctorate. And honestly, I had achieved financial success that allowed me to take a step back, explore new paths, and try something new. Basically bet on myself and starting something from scratch" His response? "Wow. You should reposition yourself to help mid-career professionals become executives like you did." That was the moment it clicked for me. Since then, I’ve been working on creating an irresistible offer for mid-career professionals who aspire to rise to the executive level. If this resonates with you and you’d like to learn more, comment below, and I’ll give you a sneak peek into what I’m building. The best is yet to come.

I'm in my fifties, about to celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary, mother of 4, grandmother of nine. I began as a secretary in 2004, got both my BS and MS in my late 30s and 40s, while raising teenagers and working two jobs. I've advanced to a middle Manager in state government (corrections) but no farther. I'm beginning my doctoral program on December 1st and working full-time. I've found that I have neither the political savvy nor the sponsorship necessary to move beyond my current role. I would love to learn more about your project.
5 Million Impressions Later: Let's Talk Email Signatures and Work-Life Balance
Last week, I posted about this idea of adding an email signature that essentially said that you do not need to respond if received outside of regular working hours. This idea went viral, no joke - almost 5 million impressions and counting. However, there was a lot of input that this approach is not a good one, and perhaps "schedule send" or "delay delivery" of email is a more appropriate approach. What do you think?

I believe this is situational and depends greatly on the type of work performed. I work in a state Correctional facility. Some issues are routine, others critical, some are required by policy to be addressed within a specific time frame. As a result, I use a combination of strategies for email. If it's a routine issue, for example a fight at 2a, with no injuries, that is informationional and not a high priority, I use delayed send. If it's important, using the same example, a fight where someone has minor injuries, I mark it important and communicate the timeline for action and response. If procedure requires a specific time frame or the issue is urgent, again using the same example, if the fight involves a weapon, hospitalization, or death. Email notification would be marked urgent in the subject line, flagged as urgent, and followed up with notification calls and in person follow up. Mine is probably a unique situation in this group, but the example demonstrates the scale of importance when sending emails outside business hours.
