Here is my 2 cents 1.What skills and qualities do I have as a professional that are important for a PM role? Which of them are not visible through my resume? -With nearly a decade of consulting experience, I have honed various transferable skills that have been essential in my shift to a product role. These include understanding business needs, prioritization, stakeholder management, strategic thinking, and most importantly, empathy towards customers. In addition, I possess a solid understanding of supply chain planning, procurement, and vendor payments which aids in developing products that achieve widespread adoption. 2.What values do I have as a person that make me a great fit for PM roles? -In my opinion, my strong listening skills, empathy, and storytelling abilities make me well-suited for PM roles. 3.What can I learn about the company/role/hiring manager, that will help me make my application better? How can I find this information? -It is crucial to understand the job description and highlight my skills, both core and transferable, to give myself an edge. -Additionally, understanding the company culture is important to determine if my values align with theirs. -Job search sites are helpful in obtaining the job description, but sometimes they can be so generic that it feels like they are looking for a superhero :). In such cases, I either try to find specific details about the role to analyze the required skills or reach out to the hiring manager for more insights. -Product roles are diverse, so it's essential to understand the company's exact needs and apply accordingly. I also review the company profile to gain insights into the industry, vision, and strategy to form an idea of what opportunities it can offer me in the future. 4.What unique experiences do I have that will make me stand out? As a consultant, I have had the opportunity to solve a variety of problems across different industries and locations. I have utilized both external and in-house products to address these challenges. This gives me an advantage when developing products, whether they are for business-to-business or internal use. Understanding the processes better allows me to quickly analyze other products available in the market and build a product that offers a competitive advantage over others.
