Lessons Learned: Creating My WBS
After going through the exercise of creating a Work Breakdown Structure, I was surprised at how difficult it was for me to break down the actual work without the expertise of a team. Coming from a tech background I understood at a higher level what would be needed to execute this project, but found breaking things into bitesize subtasks down trickier than I originally thought it'd be. I found System Design to be the easiest main task to break down because I’ve had to do that for work. Development was definitely the hardest for me. To me, this emphasizes the need for your project team and SMEs in their respective areas to be able to plan a project effectively.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the ProjectMentor Pro program. I was somewhat new to the formal concepts of project management and Cass has provided me with so much contextual knowledge and so many pro tips that I definitely plan to apply in the workplace. I’ve left each session with a better understanding of how to tackle different tasks in the project lifecycle and Cass keeps us engaged throughout the session. I know that beyond this program I’ll be positioned to execute far better than the average Project Manager!

I try to tie up as many loose ends as possible before heading out for the weekend to minimize the likelhood of spending time figuring out where my train of thought was during a task or struggling to remember any outstanding items from the previous week to start the next week off fresh. If there are things that have to carry into the next week, I will try and put calendar reminders in place to make sure they get addressed.

While all the options are important, gathering information about the project so you can effectively get up to speed as to how things were/should be done for the project to me feels most important to do first. With that context at least have some foundation to leverage or keep in mind when engaging in the other options.
