Long Quotes / Dialog
How do you handle long quotes/dialog in your stories? Or is this not a good thing to do? I have one particular long piece of dialog where the antagonist is giving a manifesto; the protagonist is watching this speech through a screen. I would like to include the manifesto, but do I just open a quote, insert the text of the speech and then close the quote? Or, should I have breaks in the speech where the protagonist / others are reacting to it?

Finished my first ever, first draft! 🎉📖
I finished the final chapter of my first novel last night! The book is called Quantum Soul, and it's Book 1 of at least a three-part Science Fiction series that I have in mind. I uploaded my manuscript and ran the summary report, comparing it to the Sci-Fi genre and got an overall score of 89.6, which is not at all what I was expecting, lol. The Summary Report recommendation is to start with the Strong Writing, since that was my lowest score. One stat that kind of concerned me was that I only have 7 slow paced paragraphs (in 173k words and 45 chapters), where the average for Sci-Fi is 295! So... maybe I need to slow it down a bit, or a lot. 🏃‍♂️‍➡️ I'm curious if anyone who uses AutoCrit could share their workflow (or at least a summary of it). I've watched the AutoCrit 101 videos on YouTube and the workflow that they seem to recommend is... - Developmental Editing - Line Editing - Copy Editing I tried to take notes of which reports belong to each of these steps, but I'm interested to hear what others do who use this tool. Thanks!! 🙏

@Kellie Mc Carthy Thank you for the tips! I have a few close friends and family members who are into Sci-Fi that have agreed to be beta readers. I'd like to at least get a developmental edit on the book before I hand it to them though. I do worry with them being friends, if they will feel like they need to sugarcoat their criticism, so I would love to get people who wouldn't care about hurting my feelings to give their input as well.

@Russell Scott So far so good. I've gone through a bunch of the reports (updated Adverbs, removed some redundancies, and filler words...etc). I've made notes on some bigger things that I want to take a look at (mostly the possible inconsistancies that AutoCrit picked up). But overall I think it's going well! I've been listening to it through the ElevenLabs iOS app, and it's been fun.
Big News.
I have officially finished the first draft of Serpentine: Echoes In The Shadows. 371 pages, 82097 words, making it my largest project to date. This project serves as the extended edition of my debut novella, simply titled “Serpentine”. Now time to start the editing process. Find out more at www.pistories.co.uk

Congratulations!
Hello world 👋
I’m brand new to writing. My day job is software related, but my wife has been doing NaNoWriMo for the past few years and after finding the Nerdy Novelist channel I decided to give it a try this year and now I’m hooked. I’m currently working on a SciFi novel that I’ve had in my mind for a while now and I’m about one or two chapters away from finishing the first draft!
